Job summary

St. Joseph Medical Center in Houston seeks a PRN patient care assistant to support nursing staff with routine tasks, hygiene, nourishment and ambulation. The role requires flexibility, strong communication, and attention to safety in a busy hospital setting.

Responsibilities include assisting with meals, responding to calls, and handling supplies, specimens and basic tests. Prior CNA/EMT and BLS certification is preferred to ensure high-quality patient care and safety.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required or preferred depending on role.
• CNA/EMT certifications preferred to support patient care duties.
• Current BLS certification is required.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Technical, clerical and interpersonal skills relevant to patient care.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with personal hygiene and meals; help with ambulation according to procedures.
• Distribute patient trays and nourishments; assist feeding and collect trays after meals.
• Respond to patient call lights and relay needs to nursing staff.
• Complete tasks such as retrieving supplies, specimens, instruments, and test results.
• Perform EKGs, point-of-care testing and phlebotomy as assigned.
• Document basic procedures in the patient’s medical record and maintain a clean environment.
• Transfer patients and equipment with proper safety precautions.
• Maintain patient safety and participate in ongoing competency and education.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under supervision and direction of the Clinical Nurse and according to established procedures, provides routine service duties, technical and nursing procedures necessary to provide for care, comfort and safety of patients. Performs tasks, assists patients with personal hygiene and meals and ambulates patients according to specific procedures. Maintains patient and unit environment in a clean and orderly condition. Utilizes basic knowledge of age-related differences in delivering patient care.

Shift: PRN Day 6:30a-7p

Duties and Responsibilities:

Service:

• Consistently supports and communicates the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph Medical Center.

• Incorporates the patient's physiological, psychological, cultural, developmental and spiritual needs into patient care.
• Consistently follows patient care, and facility guidelines and procedures in performance.
• Responds to patient call lights to determine needs and relays information to nursing personnel.
• Distributes patient trays and nourishments, assists patients with feeding and collects trays at end of meal.
• Completes various task as requested, such as retrieving and delivering supplies, specimens, instruments, test results.

Quality:

• Completes annual education requirements.
• Maintains competency, as evidenced by completion of competency validation requirements.
• Promotes of a culture of patient safety which results in the identification and reduction of unsafe practices.
• Uses judgment to prioritize patient care.
• Completes various tasks as requested, such as retrieving and delivering supplies, specimens, instruments, and test results. Implements measures to prevent exposure to blood and body fluids. Identifies risks to patients with actions taken to prevent patient harm.
• Accurately documents basic procedures and treatments in patient's medical record.
• Maintains patient and physical environment in a clean and orderly condition.
• Assists in transferring patients, beds and patient care equipment to other rooms, using necessary safety precautions.
• Monitors behavioral health patients to ensure patient safety.
• Completes tasks such as EKG's, POC testing, and phlebotomy. Other duties as assigned.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
