Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH) in Prestonsburg, KY is seeking a Phlebotomy Assistant to support the ED and lab teams. You will perform venipuncture, label specimens, collect vital signs, and assist with patient transport and reception duties.

You will work under licensed personnel, maintain safety and confidentiality, and participate in training including OSHA N95 requirements. Prior phlebotomy training or CNA/EMT background is preferred.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Phlebotomy training and/or a minimum of one (1) year of experience as a phlebotomist required.
  • Formal training or equivalent experience (Nursing Assistant, CNA, EMT) preferred.
  • Previous hospital or nursing home experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick) per hospital procedures.
  • Identifies patients and labels specimen tubes correctly.
  • Determines priority of STAT draws and ensures timely delivery to lab.
  • Performs electrocardiograms (EKG).
  • Provides direct patient care under supervision and maintains current knowledge/certification.
  • Attends safety trainings and adheres to safety guidelines.
  • Performs clerical duties to assist the healthcare team.
  • Receives and directs phone calls; may greet patients and answer phones.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of the department.

Functions under the direction of the Registered Nurse, acts as assistive personnel to provide care to patients, some of the functions include customer service skills, obtaining vital sign, point of care testing, phlebotomy, EKG's and transportation of patients in the Emergency Department.

Functions under the direction of the Registered Nurse, acts as assistive personnel to provide care to patients, some of the functions include customer service skills, obtaining vital sign, point of care testing, phlebotomy, EKG's and transportation of patients in the Emergency Department.

Responsibilities
  • Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick and bleeding time) according to established procedure of the Hospital.
  • Identifies patients and properly labels specimen tubes.
  • Determines priority of STAT draws. Ensures timely delivery of all patient specimens to lab for testing via the ED chute or via transport to lab.
  • Performs electrocardiograms.
  • Demonstrates the skills and judgment necessary to provide direct care to patients under the direction of licensed personnel.
  • Maintains current knowledge/certification.
  • Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job related hazards.
  • Assumes all other duties and responsibilities necessary.
  • Assumes clerical duties necessary to assist healthcare team to provide patient care.
  • Receives and directs phone calls and when needed in the department.
  • Will act as a receptionist, greet patients and answer phones when required.
  • Is responsible for the daily cleaning of equipment and maintaining neatness throughout the department.
Qualifications
Education
  • High school diploma or GED required.
Experience
  • Phlebotomy training and/or a minimum of one (1) year of experience as a phlebotomist required.
  • Formal training or equivalent experience, such as Nursing Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), preferred.
  • Previous hospital or nursing home experience preferred.
Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively and document information accurately.
  • Ability to deal efficiently and effectively with a wide variety of individuals.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based care setting.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology preferred.
  • Basic computer knowledge preferred.
  • Ability to move or lift patients and equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and specimen collection accuracy.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and professionalism.
Required Regulations
  • Required to comply with OSHA regulations for N95 respirator training and fit testing.
