Job summary

Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters in Norfolk, VA, seeks a patient care assistant who will work under RN supervision in the Emergency Department, performing basic clinical tasks and supporting routine patient care.

Qualifications

Job description

• Under direct departmental supervision, and following established policies, procedures and regulations, assists with various technical procedures, and performs skills including but not limited to establishing IV access, phlebotomy, specimen collection, splint application, and transporting of patients. Responsible for providing assistance in routine patient care and medically related administrative support activities in the Emergency Department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Performs basic patient care and clinical procedures appropriately under the direction of the RN.
• Performs phlebotomy, specialized skills, specimen collection and IV procedures as directed by the RN.
• Documents and communicates pertinent information ensuring confidentiality of patient records.
• Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

• EMT-Advanced, EMT-I, EMT-P, or EMT-Basic required. Must have current certification relevant to position description upon hire.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• Competency maintained through on-the-job training and education.
• Ability to interpret type and level of patient care ordered.
• Provide a variety of clinical treatments.
• Understand and follow instructions relating to basic patient care.
• PALS and ACLS required, ITLS preferred.
• Must provide record of a completed diploma (or equivalent) or academic transcript for those areas performing complexity testing.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Expected to work in a patient care environment with minimal exposure to environmental hazards such as, but not limited to, excessive noise, dust, or extremes in temperatures. Exposure to communicable diseases and moderately adverse working conditions due to the need to perform certain patient care activities can be expected.
