The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary


Columbia University Fertility Center offers innovative and personalized fertility treatment in a supportive and state-of-the-art clinical setting.


The Embryologist will serve as an essential member of the Fertility Center's Embryology Laboratory. This mid-level position is ideal for an embryologist with a solid foundation of clinical experience who seeks to expand expertise in advanced laboratory procedures.


In this role, the Embryologist performs a wide range of embryology laboratory procedures, including semen preparation, oocyte retrievals, fertilization checks, oocyte stripping, embryo assessment, embryo transfers, and cryopreservation. Proficiency in micromanipulation techniques such as ICSI is preferred. Experience with embryo biopsy is a plus; training will be provided for qualified candidates.


The role also includes responsibility for laboratory maintenance, quality assurance, documentation, and regulatory compliance, and requires close collaboration with clinical and lab staff to ensure exceptional patient care and outcomes.


A strong candidate will bring at least 3 years of experience in an embryology laboratory, a strong understanding of embryology techniques and a commitment to continuous learning and collaboration.


Responsibilities


Core Duties



  • Performs embryology laboratory procedures as directed by the Laboratory Supervisor and/or Director, including semen preparation, oocyte retrievals, fertilization checks, oocyte stripping, embryo grading and selection, embryo transfers, cryopreservation and warming (sperm, oocytes, embryos), and ICSI.

  • Prepares and sets up materials for treatment cycles using aseptic techniques, including culture dish preparation, cryopreservation, and warming procedures.

  • Assists in inventory management of culture media, consumables, and supplies.

  • Accurately documents patient and procedure data in electronic medical records (EMR) and prepares related documentation, including ART worksheets.

  • Participates in chain of custody and specimen witnessing procedures.

  • Maintains laboratory compliance through routine cleaning, equipment checks, and quality control (QC) procedures; escalates any deviations to the Laboratory Supervisor and/or Director.

  • Supports safety and quality improvement initiatives through participation in debriefs, safety huddles, and incident reporting.

  • Adheres to all safety protocols and uses appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Assists in drafting standard operating procedures (SOPs) and supports clinical research as assigned.

  • Reports incidents or non-conformities to Laboratory Supervisor and/or Director.

  • Performs additional duties within scope of training and experience.

  • Supports preparation for inspections and audits by assisting with documentation and operational readiness tasks.

  • Aids in the implementation of process changes and communicates feedback to management to help improve adoption and effectiveness.

  • Adheres to all safety, privacy, and regulatory protocols, including OSHA, EH&S, NYDOH, and HIPAA.

  • Completes required trainings and stays informed on institutional and departmental policies and procedures.


Minimum Qualifications



  • Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus three years of related experience.

  • At least 3 years of clinical embryology laboratory experience.

  • Proficiency in core embryology techniques.

  • Biopsy experience preferred but not required. Training can be provided.

  • Strong understanding of embryology tools, software, and laboratory instruments.

  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to work under a laminar flow hood and microscope with precision.

  • Strong organizational, multitasking, and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and follow through consistently.

  • Effective communicator with strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative, service-oriented mindset.

  • Demonstrates adaptability, initiative, and professionalism in a dynamic clinical setting.

  • Ability to interpret and apply data in support of laboratory initiatives and continuous improvement projects.

  • Comfortable working in diverse, team-based environments and committed to fostering equity and inclusion.

  • Proficient in basic computer applications, including electronic medical records and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Strong work ethic, positive attitude, and commitment to patient care and laboratory excellence.


Preferred Qualifications




  • Master's degree in embryology or related field.




  • Experience with electronic medical records a plus.
