Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated reverse engineer focused on embedded systems and offensive cyber capabilities for national security challenges. You will work collaboratively with world-class experts to imagine new solutions and push the boundaries of vulnerability analysis and exploit development.

Ideal candidates have a PhD in a related field, strong fundamentals in computer architecture and OS, and hands-on experience with RE tools such as

Qualifications

  • PhD in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Excellent academic record with mastery of computer architecture, operating systems and data structures
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages
  • Experience with debuggers and reverse engineering tools (Ghidra, IDA, Binary Ninja)
  • Ability to obtain Interim Top Secret clearance by start date and eventual TS/SCI with polygraph; US citizenship required

Responsibilities

  • Create and use cutting-edge techniques for automating reverse engineering and vulnerability analysis
  • Cultivate deep technical expertise of software, firmware, and hardware platforms
  • Develop exploits against bespoke embedded systems
  • Collaborate with government sponsors and operators to build mission-aligned capabilities
  • Deepen your expertise by working with reverse engineering experts
  • Engage with experts in other fields to tackle cross-domain problems
  • Present research to team members, APL management, government decision makers, and the broader cybersecurity community
