Job summary

Thorlabs in Sterling, VA seeks an Electrical/Embedded Engineer II to design, develop, and support advanced electronics for scientific imaging instruments, microscopes, and research equipment. You will bridge hardware and low-level software, owning modules from concept through validation and production release.

You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, develop firmware in C/C++, design low-noise analog/digital circuits, and participate in design reviews while mentoring junior engineers.

Qualifications

• 4–8 years designing electronic hardware and embedded systems for precision instruments.
• Experience taking products from concept to production support.
• Ability to troubleshoot complex hardware, firmware, and system issues.
• Experience in multidisciplinary product development teams.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop electronics for scientific instruments and imaging systems.
• Develop embedded firmware and HALs using C/C++.
• Create low-noise analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuits.
• Own designs from concept through PCB layout, validation, and production release.
• Support DFM/DFT and transfer to manufacturing.
• Coordinate with vendors and contract manufacturers, mentor juniors.
