Job summary

W. W. Grainger, Inc. is seeking an Embedded Systems Engineer to design and implement Linux software for real-time sensing and device control. The role includes integrating hardware, firmware bring-up, and writing device drivers for edge devices in a hybrid Santa Ana, CA setting.

You will build secure, scalable edge applications, collaborate across teams, and contribute to CI/CD pipelines with Docker/Podman tooling and edge-to-cloud integration.

Qualifications

• BS/MS in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, CS or related field.
• 5+ years of software development experience in C/C++ and Python.
• Linux experience in user space and ideally kernel space.
• Experience with device drivers, I/O interfaces (GPIO/UART/I2C/SPI).
• Familiarity with networking protocols (TCP/IP, MQTT, HTTP(S)).

Responsibilities

• Design and implement Linux software for real-time sensing and device control.
• Integrate hardware and firmware, bring-up boards, and write drivers.
• Build reliable connectivity over TCP/UDP, HTTP(S)/REST, MQTT, gRPC/Protobuf.
• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and containerize edge services.
• Secure-by-default practices and OTA updates for devices.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver features on schedule.
