Job description

Data Center Structural Engineer, Embed

Compensation Range: $103,000‑$153,000 based on market location and experience.

Location: Preferred locations include San Francisco, San Diego, Denver; additionally any U.S. or Canada location (Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto) is acceptable. Hybrid or remote work is supported; no mandatory in‑person requirements.

The role is embedded with a Hyperscaler Data Center client, dedicating 32–36 hours per week to deliver low‑GHG structural solutions and support the client’s net‑zero strategy.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the comprehensive updating of construction specifications to mandate and enable low‑GHG solutions.
  • Develop a data‑driven roadmap for decarbonizing equipment specifications using LCA data and supplier‑specific EPDs.
  • Leverage global research and LCA hotspots in heavy construction (e.g., concrete, steel) to prioritize specification updates.
  • Establish and track specification adoption metrics to quantify GHG performance against updated standards.
  • Facilitate Sustainability Page Turns—a collaborative review process—to localize requirements, ensure technical feasibility, and optimize carbon considerations.
  • Assess project constraints, market feasibility, and regional material availability to align sustainability goals with structural requirements.
  • Manage the end‑to‑end specification drafting process, technical assistance memos, and cross‑functional communication.
  • Serve as an embedded consultant, bridging high‑level net‑zero goals with construction execution.
  • Oversee multiple workstreams at varying stages of specification development and implementation.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders, translating complex carbon data into actionable engineering requirements.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering, Architecture, Sustainability, or Environmental Science; Master’s degree preferred.
  • 5–10 years of relevant experience in structural engineering, embodied carbon, or sustainability within large‑scale construction (data center experience a strong plus).
  • Direct experience in structural and/or foundation systems design with a focus on reducing carbon footprints in concrete and steel.
  • Familiarity with LCA software (e.g., One Click LCA, Tally) and ability to interpret EPDs.
  • Knowledge of CSI specification format.
  • Working knowledge of environmental regulations related to construction sites (air, water, waste).
  • Strong analytical and data interpretation skills with clear communication to technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Excellent project management skills and experience managing cross‑functional stakeholder groups.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure preferred.
  • Passion for climate action and drive to make measurable impact at scale.
