Job summary

Toyota Material Handling North America is seeking an Embedded Software Engineer -- Energy Systems to design and develop embedded firmware for energy storage, BMS, fuel cell controllers, and related platforms.

You will collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and controls engineers to deliver reliable products from concept through production, solving complex technical challenges and validating software on embedded hardware.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering or computer science field.
  • Experience developing embedded C/C++ for resource-constrained microcontrollers.
  • Familiarity with bare-metal development and RTOS.
  • Knowledge of CAN, I2C, SPI, UART protocols and embedded memory management.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement embedded firmware in C/C++ for energy storage and motive power applications.
  • Develop software for Battery Management Systems (BMS), fuel cell controllers, power electronics, and related embedded products.
  • Create reusable software components for multiple embedded platforms.
  • Contribute to software architecture and design reviews.
  • Support software through product lifecycle from concept to production.
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, controls, and systems engineers.
  • Perform software integration, debugging, and validation on embedded hardware.
  • Resolve integration issues to improve performance and reliability.

Join our Team as an Embedded Software Engineer -- Energy Systems!

The Role:

We're looking for an Embedded Software Engineer to design and develop embedded firmware for advanced energy and motive power systems. In this role, you'll contribute to Battery Management Systems (BMS), fuel cell controllers, power electronics, energy management systems, and other embedded control platforms.

Working alongside electrical, mechanical, controls, and systems engineers, you'll help develop reliable products from concept through production. If you enjoy solving complex technical challenges and seeing your software come to life in hardware, this is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact.

What You'll Be Doing:
  • Design and implement embedded firmware in C/C++ for energy storage and motive power applications.
  • Develop software for Battery Management Systems (BMS), fuel cell controllers, power electronics, energy management systems, and related embedded products.
  • Create reusable software components that support multiple embedded platforms.
  • Contribute to software architecture, product design reviews, and technical discussions.
  • Support software throughout the product lifecycle, from concept and development through validation, production, and continuous improvement.
  • Partner with electrical, mechanical, controls, and systems engineers to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Perform software integration, debugging, testing, and validation on embedded hardware platforms.
  • Resolve software and hardware integration issues to improve system performance and reliability.
What We're Looking For:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • Proficiency developing embedded software in C/C++ for resource-constrained microcontrollers.
  • Working knowledge of bare-metal development and Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS).
  • Understanding of embedded communication protocols, including CAN, I²C, SPI, and UART.
  • Solid grasp of embedded operating system concepts, including interrupts, threading, synchronization, and memory management.
  • Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a cross-functional engineering team.
What Sets You Apart:
  • Background developing Battery Management Systems (BMS), fuel cells, energy storage systems, electric vehicles, power electronics, or other embedded energy technologies.
  • Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Understanding of functional safety standards such as ISO 26262 or IEC 61508.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics and hardware specifications.
  • Hands-on work with embedded microcontrollers, DSPs, and ARM-based architectures.
  • Experience using CAN/CANopen communication networks.
  • Exposure to MATLAB, Simulink, or LabVIEW.
  • Working knowledge of Git, Jira, SonarQube, or similar software development tools.
  • Career experience in robotics, industrial automation, automotive, aerospace, medical devices, or other embedded systems.

What Your Total Compensation & Benefits Package will look like:

Salary - $73,840 - $94,667 per year. Compensation depends on the selected candidate's education and experience.

Relocation: This role may be eligible for relocation assistance.
