Job summary

Zoox is seeking an experienced embedded software engineer to join the Firmware Power Systems team in San Diego. You will design, implement, and test real-time embedded code in C/C++ for Battery Management Systems (BMS) within the Zoox vehicle.

You will collaborate with vehicle, controls, software, and validation engineers to ensure safe, reliable, and automated operation, contributing across prototyping, requirements, design, and validation phases.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or equivalent.
• 8+ years of experience developing real-time embedded software for Power Electronics and Battery Management.
• Strong embedded C/C++ programming experience.
• Experience with embedded micro-controllers and/or microprocessors (ARM, PowerPC).
• Hands‑on experience with hardware bring‑up and system debugging.
• Understanding of sensors and actuators and automotive communication protocols (CAN, LIN).

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and test embedded software for BMS (Battery Management Systems of the Zoox vehicle).
• Implement core logic for cell balancing, charging control, thermal management, and contactor controls.
• Integrate supplier sub-systems into the Zoox software stack.
• Create software requirements, design documentation, test plans, and other supporting documentation.
• Work cross-functionally with vehicle engineers, controls engineers, software engineers, validation engineers, and other experts to ensure a seamless and highly automated experience for the Zoox vehicle.
• Contribute to all phases of the software development cycle including prototyping, requirements capture, design, implementation, and validation.

Job description

Zoox is looking for an embedded software engineer to join our Firmware Power Systems team. Responsibilities include designing, building, and testing real-time embedded code in C/C++ for BMS (Battery Management Systems). Key responsibilities include implementing safety algorithms, managing board bring-up, and ensuring seamless hardware-software integration. The work includes Power management and efficiency, Charging control, a variety of operator controls, integration of supplier systems, coordination and control of all Power sub-systems, and low-level vehicle controls. This work requires collaboration with vehicle engineers, systems engineers, controls engineers, and suppliers to ensure the Zoox vehicle can drive safely and reliably. We are looking for people who are passionate about working with hardware and developing production-quality code for complex dynamic systems.

In This Role, You Will

• Experience with CAN, LIN analysis, and debugging tools (PCAN, CANalyzer, CANape, etc.)
• Familiarity with high assurance development practices and tools (Polarion, ISO-26262, MISRA C/C++, etc)

$200,000 - $240,000 a year

Compensation

There are three major components to compensation for this position: salary, Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights. The salary range for this position is $200,000 to $240,000. A sign-on bonus may be offered as part of the compensation package. Compensation will vary based on geographic location and level. Leveling, as well as positioning within a level, is determined by a range of factors, including, but not limited to, a candidate’s relevant years of experience, domain knowledge, and interview performance. The salary range listed in this posting is representative of the range of levels Zoox is considering for this position.
