Embedded Linux Field Engineering Manager

The company is founder-led, profitable, and growing. We are hiring an Embedded Linux Field Engineering Manager to lead a regionally-focused team of Field engineers in Presales and Professional Services activities, assisting customers with solution architecture, design, and delivery.

Location: This is a remote role managing a team in one of three Geos: Americas, EMEA, or APAC. You must be located in one of these regions to manage the team spanning multiple time zones.

Our IoT mission is to enable companies to create secure, connected devices. Canonical provides the Ubuntu OS and kernel with secure update mechanisms. Our customers develop mission-critical control systems, gateways, and appliances that require high security and quality. We aim to extend this security to consumer electronics and device markets.

Our Field Engineers are thought leaders who help customers solve complex problems. They are technologists passionate about embedded Linux strategy and delivery, eager to help customers achieve technical and business goals, and to demonstrate how Canonical's open source approach benefits emerging edge computing fields. They also focus on developing colleagues’ skills and understanding of customer business needs.

This role requires a blend of skills: strong Linux knowledge, proficiency in coding and scripting, experience with low-level Linux boot, BIOS, firmware, and embedded software development, and a passion for diverse client engagements. Successful candidates are business-oriented, collaborative, and pride themselves on team and company success.

The responsibilities include:

• Leading and developing a team of Field engineers (from graduate to senior level) in Presales and Professional Services
• Solving customer problems by promoting technologies and acting as a trusted advisor
• Managing remote work within a single major time zone
• Coaching, mentoring, and providing career development feedback
• Monitoring team health indicators
• Implementing disciplined engineering processes
• Representing your team and products to stakeholders, partners, and customers
• Developing and evangelizing engineering and organizational practices
• Planning and managing project progress
• Participating in leadership team collaborations

Qualifications include:

• Strong academic record from high school and university
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field
• Extensive embedded Linux experience (Yocto or similar)
• Deep Linux experience (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)
• Proficiency in Golang, Python, C, C++, or Rust
• Experience managing a small team
• Customer engagement experience
• Professional English communication skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, accountability
• Result-oriented with a drive to meet commitments
• Ability to communicate technical benefits in business terms
• Quick learner and humble attitude

Desirable traits include RTOS experience, additional languages, and prior remote, diverse, distributed work experience.
