Job summary

GE Aerospace in Grand Rapids, MI is seeking a Lead Embedded Software Engineer to join our Flight Management System team. You will develop and verify safety-critical, real-time embedded software spanning legacy and next-generation avionics programs.

The role emphasizes Ada and C, DO-178 processes, and collaboration across systems, hardware, and certification teams. This position offers hybrid work (in-office Tue–Thu) with relocation assistance for eligible candidates.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
• 6+ years of professional experience in embedded software or avionics design.
• Strong experience in Ada and/or C for real-time embedded systems.
• Experience in DO-178 or similar regulated software development environment.
• Experience across the full embedded software lifecycle (requirements, design, coding, integration, verification, debugging).
• Excellent written and verbal communication across cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Architect, develop, and maintain real-time embedded software for avionics systems.
• Design and implement low-level middleware and platform functions (I/O interfaces, diagnostics, BootROM, redundancy, cross-load).
• Read, analyze, develop, and maintain Ada and C software for safety-critical embedded systems.
• Derive, review, and maintain software requirements and interface documentation for certification needs.
• Support verification activities, including test development and debugging.
• Collaborate with systems, hardware, integration, certification, and program teams to ensure objectives are met.
• Communicate program status and mitigation plans to leadership.
• Plan and execute work to meet Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost, and compliance targets.
• Contribute to problem solving across multiple programs including new development and legacy sustainment.
