Service Corporation International in San Diego, CA seeks an Embalming Assistant to support licensed embalmers by preparing remains, performing restorations, removals, and basic cosmetic work while adhering to licensing rules and safety protocols.

The role requires a high school diploma or equivalent, enrollment or completion in a funeral service or mortuary science program, and a valid driver’s license. No prior experience is required; compassion and integrity are essential.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Enrollment or completion of a diploma program in funeral service or mortuary science is expected.
• Graduation pending from an accredited mortuary college or a related degree as required by state law.

Responsibilities

• Verify identification and embalming authorization.
• Perform restorations.
• Complete removals and transfers.
• Dress, style hair and apply cosmetics to remains.
• Assist with preparation of human remains.
• Adhere to licensing and safety regulations.
• Maintain preparation room and facility.
• Clean equipment and manage spills safely.
• Handle hazardous materials per MSDS; manage inventory.
• Receive caskets and supplies; promote safe work environment.

Fulfills the requirements as dictated by the licensing board in the practicing state or province. Works under the supervision of a licensed embalmer.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• verifying identification and embalming authorization
• performing restorations
• completing removals and transfers
• dressing, styling hair and or applying cosmetics and
• any other preparation required for human remains
• Adheres to all applicable professional, municipal, state/provincial and federal licensing authority regulations
• Assists with maintenance of preparation room and the facility
• Cleans soiled equipment and hazardous material spills
• Ensures hazardous materials and spills are handled in accordance with the Material Data Safety Sheets
• Assists with chemical and supply inventory
• Receives caskets and other funeral home supplies
• Promotes a safe work environment being aware of and practicing universal precautions and adopting general principles of safe conduct

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Completion of or currently enrolled in a diploma training program at a recognized college or technical school specializing in funeral service or mortuary science
• Graduation pending from accredited mortuary college or other degree as required by state/province law

Licenses

• Must meet all licensing requirement in applicable state/province as required by law and as prescribed by each state board
• Current state/province issued driver’s license
