Job summary

The City of Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue is seeking a lifeguard to ensure beach safety, patrol public beaches, respond to emergencies, and administer First Aid and CPR as needed. Weekend and holiday work is required.

Applicants must have a High School Diploma or GED and USLA lifeguard training; CPR/BLS and EMT certification are required or preferred; a performance test must be passed every six months, and all certifications must be current.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalency.
• Six (6) months paid work experience performing open water lifeguard duties is preferred.
• Must complete 40-hour USLA lifeguard training with Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue, or 40-hour USLA training with a nearby lifeguard agency.
• Possess a currently valid American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS/CPR card.
• EMT certification is preferred; Florida EMT certification is preferred.
• Must pass a performance test every six months after employment.
• All required certifications and licenses must be kept current while employed.
• Must be 18 or older.

Responsibilities

• Patrols public beaches and warns swimmers of hazardous conditions; posts signs.
• Responds to medical emergencies on the beach and surrounding areas.
• Enforces rules and reports missing persons to supervisor.
• Operates lifeguard vehicles, boats, rescue equipment and reports damages.
• Participates in upkeep of facilities and ongoing training.
• Conducts water safety lessons and educational programs for schools and the public.
• Performs related duties as required.
