Job summary

The City of Phoenix is seeking an Elevator Inspector II to assess and inspect elevators, escalators and related equipment in the field. You will inspect new installations and reinspect existing units for compliance with the Phoenix Construction Code and approved plans, making technical decisions with sound judgment.

Ideal candidates have knowledge of mechanical and electrical principles, apply code requirements consistently, and are proficient with Microsoft Office applications.

The Planning and Development Department (PDD) guides the physical development of the city by preserving our historic sites, planning what can be built, and ensuring safe construction of buildings and infrastructure. It is a city department of over 500 employees across five main Divisions: Business & Strategy, Planning, Historic Preservation, Plan Review, and Inspections.

PDD currently has one vacancy for an Elevator Inspector II. Elevator Inspectors II inspect and evaluate new installations of electric and hydraulic elevators, escalators, moving walks and similar equipment and for reinspecting existing equipment for compliance with approved plans, City Construction Code and related requirements. Compliance is ordered when violations are discovered. Employees work independently in the field and are responsible for making decisions requiring technical discretion, sound judgment and familiarity with a variety of installation and repair problems. The experience and knowledge necessary to inspect more complex projects differentiates this class from Elevator Inspector I. Work is performed under general supervision of an Elevator Inspections Field Supervisor or Structural Inspections Supervisor.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
  • Knowledge of fundamental mechanical and electrical principles as they apply to elevator and similar controls.
  • Ability to objectively interpret and consistently apply code requirements and related standards in accordance with department policies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products, Word, Excel & Power Point and Teams.
SALARY

Pay Range: $35.78 to $47.95 per hour.

Hiring Range: $35.78 to $41.42 per hour.

  • Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
  • Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
  • Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
  • When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Two years of experience inspecting and evaluating new and existing elevators, escalators, moving walks and similar equipment for compliance with approved plans, Phoenix Construction Code and related requirements.
  • OR Two years at the level of Elevator Inspector I.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Preferred Qualifications

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Five or more years of experience in the installation, repair, or maintenance of elevators, escalators, or similar conveyances.
  • Experience detecting possible defects and faults in equipment installations or operation and recommending or stipulating appropriate remedial measures.
  • Experience reading and comprehending construction plans.
  • Certified as a QEI Elevator Inspector.
