Job Summary: The Special Education Teacher will create a classroom environment that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students with special education services. Teachers will provide specially designed instruction per each student’s Individual Education Program (IEP) to enable access to the general curriculum and support ongoing development.
Essential Functions: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include, but are not limited to, the following tasks, duties, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not comprehensive.
  • Provide case management services for students with disabilities, including IEP development, provision, and compliance with regulations.
  • Deliver direct services to students as specified in their IEPs.
  • Follow district procedures throughout the special education process.
  • Maintain confidentiality according to FERPA and HIPAA.
  • Meet and instruct classes according to schedule.
  • Create a conducive learning environment appropriate for students' developmental and skill levels.
  • Plan and prepare lessons to promote student progress.
  • Set and maintain classroom behavior standards.
  • Employ various instructional techniques to meet student needs.
  • Use clear goals and objectives to guide learning.
  • Maintain accurate records for compliance.
  • Assess student accomplishments and provide feedback.
  • Collaborate with staff to implement accommodations and modifications.
  • Maintain census information timely.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Supervise assigned instructional assistants.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Understanding of teaching methods and techniques for student growth.
  • Facilitation skills for IEP meetings.
  • Knowledge of FAPE requirements and accommodations/modifications.
  • Effective communication and relationship skills.
  • Proficiency in operating a computer and software applications.
Minimum Qualifications: Current special education teaching certificate with appropriate endorsement(s) from the Arizona Department of Education.
Other Requirements:
  • Appropriate certification per state and federal standards.
  • Ability to pass fingerprint and background checks.
  • Obtain and maintain an Arizona driver’s license.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds and transfer students weighing up to 60 pounds.
  • Flexibility to work outside normal hours and travel as needed.
