Job Description

Under limited supervision, employs classroom management techniques that result in an atmosphere for teaching/learning in which students can know what they are expected to do. Gives instruction to the students in the areas assigned by the principal. Reports to the Principal.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Initial identification and screening of English Learners (ELs)
  • Meeting with new students and parents and participating in parent conferences
  • Helping with IEP and other placement meetings
  • Delivery of the district ESOL curriculum and goal objectives
  • Assistance with WIDA ACCESS testing
  • Working with school documents and records to prepare for audits
  • Working with English Learners (ELs) – individuals or small groups
  • Liaison for all teachers to monitor academic progress of English Learners (ELs)
  • Analysis of test data (WIDA ACCESS, SC READY, SCPASS, EOCEP) for student placement
  • Training of school staff concerning ESOL legislation and expectations for working with students
  • Ongoing professional development in federal and state ESOL regulations
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal(s)
  • Works with others consistently in a cooperative and respectful manner
Specific Duties and Responsibilities – Essential Job Functions
  • Has a prepared lesson plan that is sufficient for instructing the lesson.
  • Exercises proper care of materials and equipment.
  • Communicates needs of the classroom to the proper personnel.
  • Arrives for work at the assigned hour and does not leave before the assigned time.
  • Communicates appropriately and effectively with other staff members, parents, students, and with administration.
  • Accepts assistance, advice, and guidance from people responsible for supervising his/her performance and makes a concerted effort toward improving or refining skills.
  • Shares ideas, plans, materials, and facilities.
  • Alert to the district’s, school’s, and his/her own goals and priorities and seeks professional development appropriate to those needs.
  • Keeps information confidential unless disclosure serves a professional purpose or is required by law.
  • Respects the rights, feelings, and differences among individuals and communicates directly with involved parties.
  • Complies with state and local restrictions pertaining to controlled substances, tobacco products, alcohol, and dress.
  • Does not verbally or physically harass students.
  • Does not use profanity in the presence of students.
  • Does not have any sexual contact with students.
Standards (Classroom Management, Materials, Planning for Instruction, Teaching the Lesson)

Teachers are expected to begin the class, communicate expectations, ensure maximum on‑task behavior, address inappropriate behaviors immediately, select appropriate materials, and use lesson plans to meet behavioral objectives.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or above. Valid South Carolina teacher’s certificate in the assigned teaching area. College Degree with Teaching Certification plus progress toward additional ESOL Certification.

Progress toward ESOL Certification is preferred.

Essential Functions
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the designated locations and times.
  • Plans a program of study that meets individual student needs and state standards.
  • Establishes clear objectives for all classroom activities and communicates them to students.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media appropriate to the location and student groups.
  • Provides homework system to support daily learning.
  • Utilizes effective classroom management strategies.
  • Writes lesson plans, daily and long‑term.
  • Utilizes technology to enhance student learning.
  • Maintains a current teaching certificate and highly qualified status.
  • Steers implementation of district philosophy, instructional goals, and objectives.
  • Assesses student accomplishments regularly and provides progress reports.
  • Diagnoses learning disabilities and seeks district specialist assistance.
  • Protects students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains accurate records as required by law and policy.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Compliance and Conduct

Records attendance accurately, follows curriculum standards, maintains positive relationships with home, parent(s), and community, reports suspicions of abuse, abides by the SC Teacher Code of Ethics, participates in staff development, uses district resources effectively, reports all accidents in a timely manner, supervises students properly, maintains safe classroom, administers assessments, plans and implements instruction, and keeps records up to date.
