Position Details

TITLE: 5th Grade Elementary Teacher - Banneker Elementary 25/26 SY
LOCATION: Banneker Elementary

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district serving approximately 22,000 students with over 60 languages spoken at home. It is home to Sumner Academy, ranked #6 nationally and #1 in Kansas by US News.

The district includes Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, making it the fifth largest in Kansas. The student demographic is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. The district employs about 4,000 staff, including over 1,800 teachers.

Essential Functions
  • Implement 21st Century Skills into the curriculum.
  • Work full duty days at assigned locations.
  • Assess student abilities related to educational goals and standards.
  • Plan and employ diverse instructional strategies suited to students' needs.
  • Manage classroom behavior and contribute to behavior management across the site.
  • Communicate regularly with students and parents about expectations and progress.
  • Assess student achievement and maintain documentation for reporting.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to plan instructional goals and curriculum.
  • Participate in professional development activities.
  • Document student progress and maintain records.
  • Maintain a safe, attractive, and conducive learning environment.
  • Participate in extracurricular activities as requested.
  • Attend IEP meetings for IDEA students.
  • Possess strong content knowledge and understanding of student development.
  • Stay current with research and educational theory.
  • Plan lessons based on curriculum and student needs.
  • Establish effective relationships with students, parents, and peers.
  • Communicate effectively in oral and written forms.
  • Demonstrate physical and emotional stamina for the work environment.
  • Monitor student work and behavior actively.
  • Take attendance and follow policies.
  • Follow Section 504 and IDEA regulations.
  • Maintain professionalism and appearance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Requirements

Maintain communication with school personnel and parents, utilize technology effectively, and demonstrate reasoning, language skills, and physical ability as described.

Terms of Employment

186 days, salary per district schedule, exempt FLSA status, reports to Director of Libraries and Principal, evaluated per BOE policy.
