Job Summary

This position plans and implements an instructional program and provides related educational services for students in grades K-5. It manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement, and modifies instructional activities as required. The teacher may work independently or in teams, serve in reading or technology labs, and performs work under the general supervision of a principal or other designated administrator.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Implement an instructional program that differentiates instruction to meet each student’s learning needs.
  • Plan and deliver instruction following Prince William County Curriculum documents.
  • Assess student abilities related to educational goals, objectives, and outcomes.
  • Plan appropriate instructional and learning strategies, including determining classroom organization and materials.
  • Manage behavior of learners in the instructional setting and assist in managing behavior in other parts of the school, including school grounds and lunch.
  • Cooperate with and participate in planning and evaluation of the school program.
  • Request assistance of resource personnel as needed and work cooperatively to ensure an appropriate learning environment for all students.
  • Participate in the professional development program of the schools and School Division.
  • Coordinate instructional activities and collaborate with other professional staff both school and non school-based, as required, to maximize learning opportunities.
  • Follow professional ethics.
  • Support parent/teacher or parent/student organizations and promote parent/teacher partnerships.
  • Enforce policies and regulations established by the Prince William County School Board and staff in accordance with program guidelines.
  • Supervise pupil activities during and after school hours and ensure the conduct and safety of students in the classroom and on school grounds.
  • Demonstrate prompt and accurate written communications and reports.
  • Adhere to county and school disciplinary procedures.

  • Knowledge of pre‑adolescent and adolescent growth and development.
  • Knowledge of Prince William County Curriculum related to assignments and School Division mission, goals, and organization.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Skill in the use of multi‑media and computer technology to enhance learning.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on Division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
  • Skill in oral and written communication; excellent human relations skills.
Education Requirements
  • Minimum: Bachelor’s Degree.
Certification and License Requirements
  • State: Collegiate Professional, Post Graduate Professional, or appropriate vocational license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with endorsement(s) required for teaching assignment(s); must be eligible for Virginia Teacher Certification Program or licensure.
  • Other: If assigned off‑site tasks or serving as an itinerant, possession of a valid automobile operator’s license to operate a vehicle in Virginia is required.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Work is performed in an indoor classroom environment. The essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions, but employees may be exposed to minor inconveniences such as occasional noise, exposure to computer screens, crowded working conditions, or minor heating, cooling or ventilation problems.
