Job Summary

This position plans and implements an instructional program and provides related educational services for students in grades 6-8 (or 9-12). The teacher manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement, modifies instructional activities as needed, and carries out various student monitoring and control activities. The role may involve teaching in science labs, industrial arts/technology labs, or other educational labs that require increased monitoring.

• Manage the behavior of learners in an instructional setting to ensure a conducive learning environment and assist in the management of student behavior in other parts of the school or work site.
• Coordinate instructional activities with other professional staff, both school and non school-based, to maximize learning opportunities.
• Work in a self-contained, team, departmental, itinerant capacity, or in field, including off‑school site visits to monitor students, confer with employers, or site instructors.
• Participate in in‑service and professional development activities and staff meetings.
• Foster partnerships and ensure continuous communication with parents, both written and oral.
• Communicate continually with students on instructional expectations to keep them informed of progress.
• Assign work to and supervise instructional assistants, parent and student volunteers.
• Serve at two or more schools on a regular basis as itinerant.
• Support or participate in school‑wide student activities and social events.
• Monitor student behavior in non‑instructional areas and intervene to control and modify disruptive behavior, reporting to appropriate administrator as required.
• Collaborate with other professionals (guidance counselors, librarians, etc.) to carry out school‑wide instructional or related activities.

• Knowledge of Prince William County Curriculum related to assignments and school division mission, goals, and organization.

• Skill in the use of multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
• Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
• Skill in oral and written communication; excellent human relations skills.

Education and Certifications

Education: Minimum Bachelor’s Degree.

Certification: Collegiate professional, postgraduate professional, or appropriate vocational certificate/license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with endorsement(s) required for teaching assignments; must be eligible for the Virginia State Certification Program.

Other: If assigned off‑site tasks or serving as an itinerant, possession of a valid automobile operator’s license to operate a vehicle in Virginia is required.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a standard indoor classroom or indoor environment. The workplace generally does not expose employees to adverse environmental conditions, though minor inconveniences such as occasional noise, exposure to computer screens, crowded working conditions, and minor heating, cooling or ventilation problems may occur.
