Job description

Position Overview

Provides specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities in grades 1–4 to ensure access to the general education curriculum and progress toward Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals. The teacher collaborates with families, general education teachers, and support personnel to provide a positive, inclusive learning environment that promotes academic, behavioral, social, and emotional growth.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities.
  • Provide specialized instruction aligned to Louisiana Student Standards and individual student needs.
  • Implement accommodations, modifications, and behavioral supports as outlined in student IEPs.
  • Monitor student progress toward IEP goals and maintain required documentation and progress reports.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, administrators, and families to support student success.
  • Conduct assessments, collect data, and use data to inform instructional decisions and interventions.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and district special education regulations and procedures.
  • Create and maintain a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Participate in IEP meetings, parent conferences, and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Utilize evidence‑based instructional strategies and interventions to support student achievement and growth.
  • Participate in required district and school professional development activities.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field required.
  • Valid Louisiana teaching certificate in Special Education (Grades 1–5 or appropriate grade band) in accordance with Louisiana Department of Education guidelines.
  • Experience teaching students with disabilities in an elementary school setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of IDEA, IEP development and implementation, accommodations, modifications, and behavior intervention strategies.
  • Knowledge of Louisiana Student Standards and elementary instructional practices.
  • Strong classroom management, communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to analyze student data and use data‑driven instruction to improve student outcomes.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, families, and school personnel.
Reporting Structure

The Special Education Teacher reports to the school principal and/or designated district supervisor and is responsible for providing high‑quality instruction and support services to students with disabilities while ensuring compliance with all applicable special education requirements.
