Job Description
Reports to: Principal
Supervises: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.
Purpose: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.
Responsibilities
- Major Function: Management of Instructional Time – Teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment ready at lesson start; gets class started quickly; gets students on task promptly; maintains high level of student time‑on‑task.
- Major Function: Management of Student Behavior – Established rules and procedures for routine administrative matters, verbal participation, movement, etc.; monitors behavior during all activities; stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently while maintaining student dignity.
- Major Function: Instructional Presentation – Begins lesson with review of previous material; introduces objectives; speaks fluently; presents concepts in understandable language; provides examples and demonstrations; assigns tasks with high success; asks appropriate questions; conducts lesson at brisk pace; transitions efficiently; summarizes main points.
- Major Function: Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance – Maintains clear standards and due dates; circulates during class work to check performance; uses oral, written, and other work to assess progress; poses clear questions.
- Major Function: Instructional Feedback – Provides feedback on in‑class and out‑of‑class work; affirms correct responses; offers sustaining feedback after errors.
- Major Function: Facilitating Instruction – Has instructional plan compatible with school and system goals; uses diagnostic information to develop/revise objectives; maintains accurate records; aligns objectives, strategies, assessment, and student needs; uses resources to support program.
- Major Function: Interacting Within the Educational Environment – Treats all students fairly; interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and community.
- Major Function: Performing Non‑Instructional Duties – Carries out duties as assigned; adheres to laws and policies; follows professional development plan.
Additional Job Functions – Performs other related work as required.
Minimum Training and Experience
Degree in education or related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

- Color Discrimination: Ability to differentiate colors.
- Interpersonal Temperament: Ability to handle people, adapt under stress, and respond to emergencies.
- Physical Communication: Ability to talk and hear; use telephone.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Constantly monitor safety and well‑being of students, especially in inclusive activities.
- Motivate students.
- Maintain a clean and orderly environment; perform general clerical duties.
- Maintain order and discipline; operate common office machines.
- Maintain basic files and records.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
