JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Elementary School Assistant Principal

DEPARTMENT: Instructional

REPORTS TO: Principal

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS AND POSITION OVERVIEW

Global Community Charter School (GCCS) is a Harlem-based International Baccalaureate (IB) World School that is innovative, inquiry-based, culturally competent, and provides students with a comprehensive and rigorous curriculum that encourages critical and creative thinking.

The Assistant Principal is a proven leader with experience in teaching and leading a team to excellent outcomes and is fueled by a passion for their team's success and continual improvement. The AP, with the direction of the Principal, is responsible for the day-to-day management of teaching, learning, and maintaining an overall school culture and climate aligned with the school's mission and vision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of curriculum development and evaluation, child development, special education and ENL services, effective instructional and improvement strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and strategies for closing achievement gaps.
  • Direct and manage assigned areas of instructional program and campus operations.
  • Assist the principal in planning, organizing, scheduling, directing, and evaluating all school activities, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities.
  • Supervise and evaluate designated staff regarding their performance within the school program framework.
  • Use data from multiple measures to assess student academic progress and social-emotional well-being regularly.
  • Commit to ongoing growth for self and others; lead, support, and participate in professional development.
  • Maintain strong organizational skills to oversee and support multiple tasks and initiatives daily, based on priorities set by the Principal.
  • Implement positive and restorative disciplinary practices according to the school’s policies; foster a joyful and rigorous environment reflecting the IB Learner Profile Attributes.
  • Support HR functions, including interviewing new staff and conducting performance reviews.
  • Engage teachers in coaching cycles and implement research-based strategies to enhance teacher and student performance.
  • Foster relationships, collegiality, and team building among staff; encourage active involvement in decision-making.
  • Build meaningful relationships with families to promote their investment in their child's learning.
  • Model and promote the IB learner profile to create a cohesive school culture of academic and personal success.
  • Supervise after-school activities, late student pickups, and other school activities as directed.
  • Support the school as directed by the Principal.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Covid vaccination required.
  • A M.A., Ed.M, or Master's degree in education from an accredited institution.
  • NYS SBL Certification preferred.
  • Minimum of five years as an effective classroom teacher with at least two years in leadership roles.
  • Experience in a high-performing urban school setting preferred.
  • A team player who collaborates effectively with colleagues.
