Job summary

Uncommon Schools in Rochester is seeking an Elementary Physical Education Teacher for a temporary role starting immediately, with an expected end date around December 2026. You will deliver a culturally responsive PE curriculum, promote active lifestyles, and build a positive classroom culture.

The ideal candidate holds a bachelor’s degree with a 2.5+ GPA and 1–2 years of relevant experience; MA state certification tests may be required to meet state requirements.

Job Description

Uncommon Physical Education (PE) Teachers cultivate a passion for an active lifestyle in every student. Our PE instruction--which includes sports, team building exercises, and physical exercise--is culturally-responsive and fast paced. We have built a community that encourages respect and hard work and celebrates studentsâ academic and nonacademic achievements. Our goal is for students to develop into strong teammates who are interested in and knowledgeable about healthy lifestyle habits.

This Elementary PE Teacher role is a TEMPORARY POSITION. The ideal candidate would be available to start immediately, with an expected end date on/around middle of December 2026.

Responsibilities

1. Instruction

• You'll create a safe and interactive environment where students feel empowered to engage in physical activity.
• Youâll develop students' physical fitness through team building activities; independent exercises such as stretching, cardio, and calisthenics, and structured sports and games.
• Youâll help students build healthy habits in mindset and physical activity.
• You'll teach an engaging and culturally responsive PE curriculum that meets the needs of various types of learners in your class.

2. School Culture

• Youâll build positive relationships with students to ensure they feel seen, loved, and heard.
• Youâll partner with studentsâ families to ensure appropriate resources are available to support their child's learning needs.
• You'll engage in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
• You'll participate in weekly, school-wide meetings to cultivate community, model our core values, and encourage student achievement.
• You'll partner with your grade level team to develop academic goals and practice instructional strategies.

• Required Experience:
  • A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities (1-2 years experience preferred).
  • An expertise in high school education, physical education, sports science and management, kinesiology, physical fitness, or participation in collegiate athletics.
  • Prior to the start of employment, you must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and have earned a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher by the time employment begins. You do not need to be certified to be hired; however, if hired you will need to pass state teacher certification tests to meet the MA state requirements.

Compensation

Compensation for this role is between $52,000 to $68,000.

Starting pay is determined using various factors including but not limited to relevant full-time teaching experience, education certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. Candidates without full-time Teaching experience will likely have a starting salary of $52,000.
