Qualifications

  • Must meet paraprofessional qualifications as defined by district/state.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Two years of work experience with children or college coursework.
  • Associate degree or higher satisfies eligibility.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of reading, writing, and mathematics.

Responsibilities

  • Provides one-on-one behavioral and academic intervention in the general education setting.
  • Follows behavior plan for the student as written by the teacher.
  • Follows academic plan as indicated by the teacher.
  • Serves as a positive role model for the student.
  • Provides consistency and structure for the student.
  • Provides immediate behavioral reinforcements.
  • Implements appropriate de-escalation strategies.
  • Assists the student to engage in or remain engaged in activities.
  • Helps minimize impulsive behavior.
  • Supports development of social and educational skills daily.
  • Assists in building self-directed appropriate behavior and social responsibility.
  • Ensures student safety at all times.
  • Maintains confidentiality about student and family.
  • Communicates professionally with students, colleagues, and parents.
  • Maintains data related to behavior (appropriate/inappropriate).
  • Provides instructional assistance in collaboration with the classroom teacher.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor/building principal.

Position: Elementary Paraprofessional
Requirements
  • Must meet the qualifications for a Paraprofessional:
  • Obtain a high school diploma or equivalent and have two years of work experience with children or completed two years of coursework in a related field, or upon employment complete within 60 calendar days of hire training specific to the assigned student population and job duties as they relate to the academic and behavioral progress of students
  • Complete two years of study at an institution of higher education; or
  • Obtain an associate’s (or higher) degree; or
  • Meet a rigorous standard of quality and be able to demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics (or, as appropriate, reading readiness, writing, readiness, and mathematics readiness).

Job Responsibilities

  • Helps to increase the child/youth’s social and educational competencies by building or reinforcing those daily living skills that will assist the child/youth in living successfully at school.
  • Assists in developing the child/youth’s ability to sustain self-directed appropriate behavior, internalize a sense of social responsibility, and/or enable participation proactively in educational activities.
  • Ensures safety of client at all times.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding child/youth and his/her family.
  • Communicates professionally with students, co-workers and parents.
  • Maintain data related to appropriate and inappropriate behavior.
  • Provide instructional assistance while working collaboratively with the classroom teacher.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor/building principal.
