This teaching position is located at the prestigious University of Texas Elementary School in downtown Austin, Texas. This 194 days (traditional school calendar) position is from August 1st to May 31st.Salary is spread over 12 months. The University of Texas Elementary School is a public charter school and follows all state and federal regulations for public school services. The University of Texas Elementary School is a part of the University of Texas at Austin’s College of Education and participates in the Texas Teacher Incentive Allotment.Start date is August 1, 2025. A new hire for this position will be required to attend new employee orientation on July 28, 2025 in Austin, Texas.

Purpose

To bring the joy of music to the UT Elementary School community by delivering engaging, developmentally appropriate music instruction to students in Pre-K through 5th grade. This position emphasizes string instruction using the Suzuki Method and includes coordination of school-wide musical productions.

Responsibilities
  • Design and implement a comprehensive music program for students in grades Pre-K through 5, grounded in the Suzuki Method and other developmentally responsive pedagogies.
  • Teach foundational music skills including rhythm, melody, harmony, aural training, and basic music theory through singing, movement, instruments, and ensemble playing.
  • Provide focused string instruction with an emphasis on Suzuki methodology and individual musical growth.
  • Plan and lead after-school music productions and performances that highlight student progress and creativity.
  • Create a joyful, inclusive classroom environment that fosters curiosity, collaboration, and a love for music.
  • Adapt instructional techniques to accommodate students’ varying skill levels, needs, and interests.
  • Assess and monitor student progress regularly, providing meaningful feedback to students and families.
  • Collaborate with grade-level teams and other specials teachers to support integrated, cross-curricular learning.
  • Organize and supervise rehearsals and performances with high expectations for musical excellence and performance etiquette.
  • Recruit, coordinate, and engage students and families in music enrichment opportunities and community showcases.
Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or a related field (emphasis in Instrumental Music or Strings preferred). Texas Teacher Certification in Music (EC–12). A minimum of 3 years of successful music teaching experience, ideally in an elementary setting. Extensive training and practical experience in the Suzuki Method. Demonstrated ability to lead student musical performances and manage production logistics. Strong communication and collaboration skills with students, families, and colleagues. Understanding of TEKS and the curriculum standards of the State of Texas. General knowledge of curriculum and instruction. Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a non-traditional school setting with special needs students of varying abilities and interests. Maintain awareness and understanding of the role that trauma may play in the lives of our students. Proficiency in technology and technology applications to the level specified by the district. This position requires fingerprinting. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Proficiency in a second language (Spanish preferred). Background in inclusive music education and trauma-informed teaching practices.

Salary Range

$57,000 + depending on qualifications
