Job summary

An essential function of this position is the ability to work in person and physically report for work on site.

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for professional development and support of classroom teachers and specialists working with students in mathematics. This position facilitates professional learning communities to plan standards-based instruction and assessment, model lessons, and co-teaching. This position assists teachers in effectively utilizing increased instructional time. This position will not have regular classroom responsibilities. The primary purpose of this position is to improve student achievement for all children by working directly with teachers to support their instruction of mathematics.

Job Summary
This position collaborates with teachers, specialists, administrators, and the Student Learning Department to continuously improve mathematics instruction for grades kindergarten through five. The primary purpose is to improve student achievement in mathematics for all children by working directly with teachers and specialists in implementing research-based and evidence-based instructional strategies. This position supports Division-wide mathematics initiatives by providing school-based professional learning. This position performs work under the direction of the building principal, the Supervisor of Mathematics, and the Supervisor of Instructional Coaching.

Essential Responsibilities - specific to this job
  • Serves as a liaison between the Student Learning Department and schools
  • Collaborates with teachers and teacher teams in curriculum implementation using research-based instructional strategies and the effective use of formative assessments to support student mastery of the PWCS Curriculum and Virginia standards of learning
  • Supports teachers to improve and sustain student mathematics achievement through co-planning, co-teaching, demonstration lessons, observations with growth-producing feedback, and facilitation of teacher reflection
  • Collaborates with English Learner, Special Education, and Gifted staff to increase the capacity of mathematics teachers and specialist by facilitating use of successful, research-based instructional strategies for diverse learners
  • Effectively uses data for making instructional decisions and supports teachers in doing the same
  • Contributes to the planning of intervention, remediation, enrichment, or tutorial opportunities
  • Works with school personnel to assess and plan for professional learning needs
  • Designs and implements professional learning to support school-based goals in mathematics in alignment with the Division’s Mathematics Vision and PWCS Curriculum with an emphasis on the NCTM and NCSM core practices
  • Participates in professional associations, conferences, and trainings related to instruction and professional development to maintain knowledge of current trends, research, and effective practice that support student learning
  • Participates in mathematics teacher leader meetings and Division mathematics events
  • Works with parents/guardians and community leaders to foster continuing home/school/ community partnerships focused on students’ learning of mathematics
