Job description

Job Opportunity: Library Assistant at Roosevelt Elementary School

Roosevelt Elementary School is seeking a Library Assistant for the 2025/26 school year. The role primarily involves:

  1. Communicating with the Librarian
  2. Categorizing and classifying library materials
  3. Assisting with acquisitions, including reviewing orders, budgets, invoices, and building needs
  4. Conducting local inventory and audits
  5. Following library standards and guidelines for classifying documents
  6. Applying Sears subject heading policies, Dewey Decimal Classification, MARC21, and cataloging materials according to local conventions
  7. Ensuring materials are easily retrievable using standardized methods
  8. Performing original and copy cataloging and updating online records
  9. Inputting details about new materials into the library catalog
  10. Adapting cataloging rules for new types of materials
  11. Collaborating with colleagues to improve cataloging processes
  12. Determining treatments for series or multipart items
  13. Organizing backlogs and conducting book repairs or weeding as needed
  14. Running library reports and following up on them
  15. Organizing materials based on priority
  16. Attending conferences and continuing education
  17. Serving on the library committee
  18. Working alongside the librarian and assistants in various locations
  19. Possibly working with small student groups on special projects
  20. Shelving books and assisting with library programs and activities

Additional duties, comprising no more than 10% of work time, may include:

  1. Preparing materials for classes or small groups
  2. Making book recommendations to teachers and students
  3. Taking notes at staff meetings and relaying information to the librarian
  4. Checking out books to staff and students
  5. Assisting users with library programs, databases, and research
  6. Helping with library decorations and seasonal displays
  7. Pulling books for teachers
