Elementary Head Teacher (2025-26 School Year)
The Elementary Head Teacher is essential for SAGA in order to provide a high quality education to its elementary students, taught in a warm, inviting and creative learning environment. The teacher works with the Director of Elementary Education and in cooperation with other elementary teachers to implement a comprehensive and interesting curriculum in a structured classroom. These objectives are accomplished in a German language immersion environment.
Teachers in this position adhere to the Washington State and Thüringen curriculum standards and maintain an excellent standard of learning and achievement. The ideal candidate must be comfortable in the planning, organizing, and implementing education services for children.
Position Responsibilities
- Create a secure and comfortable classroom environment that that reflects a diversity of cultures, religious beliefs and norms within our community and within German-speaking communities
- Appropriately challenge children’s individual German language ability on a daily. Conduct all classroom instruction in German
- Encourage / teach students to work together to resolve conflicts and problem-solve
- Effectively communicate and collaborate with co-workers, parents, board members, and students
- Conduct parent teacher conferences twice a year in a respectful and constructive manner
- Plan a yearly curriculum, including materials for differentiated levels of learning, and create weekly lesson plans. Develop parallel themes with colleagues
- Teach reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, health, and, where applicable, art, music and sport to students in a classroom, utilizing course of study adopted by the SAGA Board of Directors, and other appropriate learning activities
- Manage the classroom according to SAGA’s classroom management guidelines and follow the school’s policies and procedures
- Physical requirements include lifting children, interacting with them at floor level, and handling equipment
- Teacher reports to the Director of Elementary Education and works with the Director to address classroom dynamics needing staff attention
- Work with school leaders and the board to be an active part of the growth of the school and the elementary program
- If necessary, teacher is able to work with, mentor and guide a teaching assistant
- Perform related duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Fluent in English and German; Must be able to communicate effectively, verbal and written, with co-workers and parents in both languages
- Bachelor’s degree (with foreign teacher certification) or Master’s in Elementary Education required
- Background check required; must be eligible to work in the US at the start of employment
- Minimum three years teaching experience
- Ability to multitask; maintain confidentiality; demonstrate team-oriented vision
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills when interacting with adults and students
- CPR/First-Aid certified for children and adults
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, email communication, and cloud services (i.e. Google Drive)
Working Conditions
- Employment is based on 25 - 35 hours per week, Monday - Friday, in a classroom environment; participate in monthly staff meetings before school and weekly team meetings
