  • In cooperation with supervisors, plans, delegates, and supervises to ensure that all custodial operations of the building are functioning efficiently and effectively.
  • Complete work assignments daily and help other workers as necessary.
  • Know and execute the building security procedures as needed.
  • Utilize appropriate energy conservation measures.
  • Identify, direct, and follow safety and health regulations and District guidelines.
  • Assure safe and healthy work and play conditions throughout the campus.
  • Maintain excellent communication with the principal or immediate supervisor.
  • Establish and maintain a cooperative and effective working relationship with staff, students, co-workers, and supervisors.
  • Give assistance to and work harmoniously with community groups as needed.
  • Organize the work assignments of the custodial staff.
  • Instruct and assist co-workers and subordinates in the performance of their duties as needed.
  • Maintain boiler as needed. Clean and prepare boiler for inspection, if the building utilizes a boiler for the heating system.
  • Periodically inspect heating motor belts and filters to ensure routine maintenance schedules are adequate. Change filters as needed.
  • Make minor repairs on custodial equipment, building hardware, sprinkler systems, and school furniture.
  • Order custodial supplies, as needed, utilizing District procedures.
  • Work with the building administrator in coordinating necessary set-ups for various activities.
  • Clean and maintain the interior and the exterior of the building, including parking lots, outside grounds, and walkways as needed.
  • Wash cafeteria and main foyer windows as needed.
  • Check hallways for trash and spills during school hours.
  • Assess, report, and make recommendations for improvements in the building, including custodial services and safety needs.
  • Assist in interviews of custodial job applicants for positions in building.
  • Use the services and expertise of the maintenance department as needed.
  • Daily check mailbox, e-mail, and phone messages for communication from staff and administrators.
  • ELEMENTARY HEAD CUSTODIAN

    POSITION SUMMARY
    :

    Employee is responsible for the building, its security, for efficient utilization of supplies and equipment, and for providing direction to those who work under him/her. Employee performs a wide variety of custodial, building and grounds maintenance, and cleaning tasks, and assures the safe and healthy work and lay conditions of the school buildings and grounds. Employee will become thoroughly acquainted with the building and all aspects of its operation. He/she will care for the grounds and exterior of the building, as well as the interior.

    Must have at least three years of professional custodial experience
    Must have supervisory experience and/or training

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
    Work scheduled hours on a consistent basis

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:
    Criminal background clearance
    Must hold at least a current Grade IV license for gas-fired or oil-fired boiler, if the building utilizes a boiler for the heating system
    Excellent safety record

    KNOWLEDGE OF:
    School board policies and procedures
    Operation and maintenance of electric heating system, if the building utilizes electric heat
    Computer, phone, and e-mail skills at a basic level

    ABILITY TO:
    Organize and perform job responsibilities efficiently and independently without close supervision and able to pay strict attention to detail
    Speak, read and follow written or verbal communications, and take instructions from supervisor
    Maintain a good work attendance record, be punctual, and follow District procedures for reporting all absences

    Train employees in use of basic custodial tools, equipment, and materials.
    Use small hand tools such as those commonly used by carpenters, plumbers and mechanics.
    Anticipate the needs of his/her area of responsibility.
    Supervise up to two workers assigned to his/her crew.
    Delegate responsibilities and work assignments effectively with custodial staff.
    Organize a schedule that allows for outside cleaning and maintenance as needed.
    Organize time, materials and equipment for efficient and thorough use.

    This position requires physical stamina.     LEVEL OF COMPENSATION
    Level G on the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Salary Schedule.
