Job summary

Kansas City Public Schools is seeking an Elementary ESOL Teacher to provide English Language Development instruction aligned to state standards within the guaranteed curriculum. The teacher will identify English Learners and collaborate with staff to support language growth across subjects.

Responsibilities

• Facilitates learning using multiple presentation methods to engage EL students.
• Collaborates with teachers to adapt materials for second language acquisition using ELD and standards.
• Administers tests to monitor progress and reports results to stakeholders.
• Maintain SIS: grades, progress, attendance, lesson plans, student records, discipline information, parent contact log.
• Maintains a positive classroom environment conducive to learning.
• Communicates and translates for stakeholders in their native language when possible.
• Participates in faculty, professional meetings, conferences, and PD/workshops.
• Create and maintain daily schedules to support EL students and ESOL paraprofessionals.

Reports To: Director of Language Services

FLSA Status: Exempt

Teach content subject aligned to state and national standards outlined by KCPS' guaranteed and viable curriculum. Proactively seeks to identify and screen possible English Learners, and collaborates with all staff members to ensure English Language Development instruction and support is provided within all subject area.

What You'll Be Doing: (Responsibilities)

• Facilitates learning and instruction by using multiple presentation methods: demonstrating, modeling, visual representations, and strategies that aid in supplementing and engaging students content.
• Collaborates with teachers and staff to adapt and scaffold materials, assignments and assessments to improve second language acquisition using ELD, KCPS', and state standards.
• Administers tests to evaluate the progress, results, and issues reports to inform all stakeholders of student progress.
• Keep and Maintain in SIS: grades, progress, attendance, lesson plans, student records, discipline information, parent contact log, as needed or required.
• Maintains a positive classroom environment conducive to learning.
• Ensures communication and translation/interpretation for stakeholders (parents/guardians) in their native language when possible.
• Participates in multiple meeting types: faculty, professional meetings, educational conferences, professional development and workshops.
• Create and maintain daily schedules to meet the needs of EL students and support in the creation of the ESOL Instructional Paraprofessionals to ensure coverage.
• Other duties as assigned.

To Be Successful at This Job, You'll Need To: (Minimum Qualifications)

• Bachelor's degree in Education from four-year college or university
• Valid Missouri State Certification in grade level or content area assigned
• Valid Missouri State Certification in ESL (K-12) or willing to obtain ESL Endorsement

• Demonstrated experience and/or training in current techniques and skills in teaching English language learners.
• Teaching experience in urban schools.
