Job summary

South Asian Youth Action (SAYA) seeks a Dance Activity Specialist for elementary students in Jackson Heights. This part-time, in-person role runs during the school year, with a schedule of 2–5 days per week and a focus on engaging, developmentally appropriate dance curricula.

The specialist will design lessons across hip-hop, ballet, modern, cultural/folk, and creative movement, fostering creativity, confidence, and teamwork in a culturally responsive classroom.

Qualifications

• Experience teaching dance to elementary-age children in school, camp, or community program settings.
• Minimum of 2 years of academic preparation in dance or creative movement, or equivalent training.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and manage multiple priorities, people and projects effectively.
• Experience designing and teaching courses to ensure youth success and supports youth-centered learning.
• Demonstrated knowledge of teaching dance styles (Hip-Hop, African Dance, Latin, Jazz, Modern, Ballet, Lyrical) to elementary-school youth.

Responsibilities

• Supervise all activities to ensure the health, safety and well-being of program participants.
• Develop and implement lesson plans introducing various dance styles.
• Create a culturally responsive environment reflecting diverse student backgrounds.
• Incorporate skill-building activities progressing over time, culminating in a student showcase.
• Manage classroom and maintain positive learning environment.
• Build positive relationships with youth and adults, serving as a role model.
• Care for spaces/materials and report misuse to Program Director.
• Submit program reports including supply requests, lesson plans, attendance and timesheets.
• Assist with ordering and maintaining equipment and supplies.
• Participate in training, meetings, and events.
