Job Summary:
The Art Teacher will be responsible for developing in each student an interest in and the ability for creative expression in visual terms, using skills and techniques of artistic expression consistent with school guidelines; to develop aesthetic understandings and appreciations; to discover and develop talents of students in the field of art.
Essential Functions:
- Teaches knowledge and skills in art, including drawing, painting, lettering, and art history
- Provides instruction by which students develop aesthetic concepts and appreciations and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art
- Demonstrates techniques in activities such as drawing and painting
- Understands the versatility of acrylic paints: dry brushing, staining, layering, underpainting, monoprinting
- Understands a variety of “masters” techniques
- Knows and can apply elements of design and modern principles of art
- Knows the fundamentals and different approaches to drawing media technique
- Provides individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual and artistic abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities
- Instructs students in proper care and use of tools and equipment
- Organizes storage areas and control use of materials, equipment and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and to minimize time required for distribution and collection
- Evaluates each student’s performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings, and prepare progress reports
- Selects and requisition books, instructional materials, tools, instructional aids, and maintain required inventory records
- Plans and presents art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students’ work for the school and the community
- May sponsor exhibits from outside the school
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school and/or in self-selected professional growth activities
- Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress
- Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs, such as after school art club
- Complies with policies, regulations and procedures of Chester Community Charter School; communicates effectively with parents and work collaboratively with staff
- Displays high-level professional conduct and image at all times; establishes and maintains an acceptable attendance record; and participates in extra-curricular activities and/or leadership roles outside the classroom
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education from an accredited college or university
- Pennsylvania Criminal Record Check Clearance
- Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance
- FBI Criminal Background Clearance
Certifications/Licenses:
- Valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Instructional Certificate in Art Education PK-12
Demonstrated Knowledge of:
- Mastery of the necessary content knowledge and skills to successfully teach assigned content area(s) and grade level(s) and deliver exceptional standards-based instruction
- Proficiency in automated student information systems for progress and grade reporting and class work documentation
- Exceptional classroom management, organization, planning, instructional delivery, leadership, and technical skills
- The principles, practices and methods of grade level education
- Subject-specific expertise
- Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS)
- Response to Instruction and Intervention (RTII)
- Critical thinking methodologies and problem-solving techniques
- Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC) standards
Demonstrated Ability to:
- Assess students’ needs and learning styles and to design appropriate differentiated instruction
- Use and apply simulations and technological innovations in the classroom
- Facilitate inquiry-based learning as well as whole class, small group and individual instruction
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, administrators, support staff, parents and students
