Job summary

The Goodman Community Center Elementary Program seeks Co‑Leads to supervise classroom activities, carry out daily lesson plans, and ensure the safety and well‑being of children in afterschool programming at a licensed childcare site.

Co‑Leads collaborate with the Elementary Lead Teacher to develop a welcoming environment, assist with homework, and promote literacy and math development while fostering inclusive, developmentally appropriate practice for K–5 students.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Two courses in early childhood education (credit or non-credit) or equivalent.
  • Experience in an after-school setting with elementary-aged children is preferred.
  • Familiarity with WI Child Care Licensing Rules and City Accreditation Guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Elementary Lead Teacher to develop a welcoming environment and assist with homework.
  • Create a culturally inclusive classroom with activities supporting diverse backgrounds.
  • Support social-emotional development using Positive Behavior Supports and Conscious Discipline.
  • Oversee meal provision from Goodman's in-house kitchen for the children.
  • Lead outdoor or gym-based physical activities and support group participation.
  • Maintain organization and sanitize classroom spaces regularly.
  • Document portfolios for assigned children with communications and work samples.
  • Plan long- and short-range activities aligned with curriculum objectives.
  • Attend meetings and perform additional duties as assigned.

Description

The Elementary Program at Goodman Community Center is a place for children from all backgrounds to play, socialize, learn and grow. Co‑Leads supervise classroom activities, carry out daily lesson plans, and ensure the safety and physical well‑being of children in afterschool programming (licensed & accredited childcare site).

Hours
  • Mondays 1:00 pm to 5:45 pm
  • Tuesdays-Fridays: 2:15 pm to 5:45 pm
Pay

Hourly wage starting at $20/hour

Essential Job Functions
  • Collaborate with the Elementary Lead Teacher in developing a welcoming environment; establishing lesson plans and assist children in their homework completion and encourage literacy and math skill building.
  • Create a culturally inclusive classroom with activities that support different cultures and backgrounds.
  • Support children in their social‑emotional development using various approaches including Positive Behavior Supports and Conscious Discipline.
  • Ensure that youth receive the free meals prepared by Goodman's in‑house production kitchen.
  • Support physical activity by leading activities outdoors and/or in Goodman's gym space.
  • Provide a supportive environment where children are encouraged to participate in a program as an individual or as of a group in classroom settings.
  • Maintain organization, rotation of materials and regularly sanitize and clean classroom spaces.
  • Maintain portfolios on assigned group of children throughout the school year making sure to include teacher communication, anecdotal notes, work samples, pictures, etc.
  • Use pre-program time to plan both long and short range activities in accordance with curriculum objectives, making sure to support developmentally appropriate practice as well as program goals.
  • Attend all necessary meetings and perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • 18 years of age or older
  • High school or equivalent
  • Completed two non-credit department approves courses in early childhood education or two courses for credit in early childhood education (one broad based) or its equivalent from an institution of higher education
  • At least 1 year of experience working in an after-school setting or with elementary age children K-5th grade
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Familiarity with State of WI Child Care Licensing Rules and Regulations and City of Madison Accreditation Guidelines
  • Experience working with staff and families from diverse backgrounds and experiences
