Department Overview:

Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is Madison’s public recreation provider. MSCR offers a wide variety of athletic, recreational, arts and enrichment activities and classes for all ages in an accessible, inclusive setting. Programs include swimming instruction, MSCR on the Move, arts & enrichment classes, youth summer camps, sports camps & clinics, adult & 50+ fitness, adult sport leagues including pickleball, softball and tennis, and a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including paddling sports, pontoon trips, camping, orienteering and challenge courses.

As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), MSCR also provides afterschool enrichment activities, clubs and sports as well as summer programming in Madison elementary, middle and high schools, Allied Learning Center and Meadowood Neighborhood Center. Afterschool clubs and sports include: arts & enrichment, homework/academic clubs, drama, dance, skiing, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country and much more!

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Prior experience working or volunteering with children
  2. Ability to work Monday thru Friday for the entirety of the program, including training week
  3. Must be in high school or older
  4. Reliable transportation to job site
  5. Dedicated to making a difference in your community

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience working with youth in a recreation or childcare setting
  2. Classroom experience
  3. Experience with conflict resolution
  4. Experience providing accommodations for individuals with disabilities
  5. CPR and First Aid certification
  6. Bilingual in Spanish or Hmong or other languages

Position Summary/Job Duties:

SREC Snapshot
SREC sites provide programming for summer school students in grades 4k-4 (up to 200 students per site location). Each classroom has 15-18 students supervised by two Program Leaders. Program Leaders spend the majority of the time in the classroom or the playground actively supervising at all times. Each site has a leadership team for support and guidance.

General Responsibilities:

  1. Plan, prepare and lead fun and inclusive enrichment and recreation activities daily
  2. Enjoy the outdoors while supervising recess and field trips
  3. Create a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment
  4. Work as a team with other program staff to carry out responsibilities
  5. Maintain a clean and organized classroom
  6. Help students work through conflict
  7. Interact with parents as needed
  8. Other duties as assigned

Program Dates:
Mandatory Training Week: Friday, June 13 and Monday, June 16 - Friday, June 20 on-site from 10:30am-4:30pm. There will be no training on June 19 in observance of Juneteenth. Program Dates: June 23-July 31. Staff will work normal hours Friday, August 1. Programs closed for the fourth of July. Holidays/No program (unpaid): Thursday, June 19 and Friday, July 4.
