Job description

The Electronics Technician is a hands-on generalist responsible for moving hardware from prototyping into production. The role centers on two core areas: precision soldering and rework of fine-pitch components, and board-level debugging of embedded systems. The technician also supports test and assembly in production of small robotic systems. The position spans prototype through low-volume production, offering direct ownership of the work and quick feedback on its results.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Hand-solder and rework fine-pitch surface-mount components (QFN, 0402; 0201 and BGA rework a plus) to the precision required for prototype and low-volume builds.
  • Debug battery-powered embedded electronics at the board level using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, and bench power supplies, isolating faults across analog, digital, and power domains.
  • Assemble and bring up small robotic systems in both R&D and production settings, and contribute to process improvements as build volumes grow.
  • Maintain clear documentation — test procedures, build notes, and records sufficient for another technician to reproduce the work.
Skills and Competencies
Required:
  • Demonstrated proficiency in fine-pitch soldering and rework. This is a primary screening criterion. Familiarity with IPC workmanship standards is preferred.
  • Ability to read schematics and PCB layouts, and to translate them into a structured debugging approach.
  • Practical command of bench instrumentation and a methodical, hypothesis-driven approach to failure analysis.
  • Sufficient Python and Linux proficiency to maintain test automation independently. A formal software engineering background is not required.
  • Mechanical aptitude for assembly and fixture work, and the flexibility to move among bench, production, and design tasks as priorities shift.
The ideal candidate would also:
  • Develop and adapt Python scripts on Linux to automate testing, data capture, and instrument control (e.g., over serial, GPIB/VISA, or comparable interfaces).
  • Design, build, document, and validate custom test fixtures and equipment, from initial concept through wiring and assembly.
Education and Experience
  • A minimum of three years in an industry hardware role (manufacturing, R&D, contract electronics, or comparable). Equivalent demonstrated experience may be considered in lieu of formal credentials.
  • An associate degree in electronics or electrical technology, relevant trade or military training, or comparable evidence of competence
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • May supervise assembly technicians during testing, prototyping, and production steps.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to sit or stand for up to four hours at a time.
  • Ability to lift up and carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to use a ladder and occasionally work overhead.
  • Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The above job description is not intended to be an all-inclusive list of duties and standards of the position.

Incumbents will follow any other instructions, and perform any other related duties, as assigned by their supervisor.
