Job summary

The City of Lakeland is seeking a specialized technician to install and maintain computer-based electronic equipment and electromechanical devices used to monitor and protect an electric power utility. Work is performed per established policies, but the incumbent must exercise judgment and initiative in tasks.

Responsibilities include assisting in installation, testing, calibration, and repair of equipment, using standard test equipment, and following factory manuals and schematics.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Six months of experience in basic electronics coursework or Relay Technology coursework.

Job description

This is a specialized technical position supporting the installation and maintenance of computer-based electronic equipment and electromechanical devices used to control, monitor, and protect an electric power utility. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures; however, the incumbent is expected to exercise judgment and initiative in performing tasks. Work performance will be reviewed by inspection and observation.

  • Assists in the installation, testing, calibration, and repair of all types of electronic and electromechanical equipment, ranging from digital computers used in real-time process control applications to analog devices used in the electric power industry, using standard and specialized test equipment and tools.
  • Uses factory manuals and schematics to repair equipment.
  • Constructs and/or configures equipment to assist department engineers in implementing unique monitoring or control systems.
  • May be required to participate in and/or facilitate training to support departmental or City initiatives and requirements.
  • May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
  • Position is designated as Mission Critical.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
  • Participates in out-of-town training, which may require overnight stays.
  • Keeps vehicles and work areas clean and organized.
  • Works as part of a team to accomplish tasks.
  • High school diploma from an accredited school or a GED.
  • Six months of experience in basic electronics coursework or Relay Technology coursework.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be willing to possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid telephone number.
  • Associate degree in Engineering Technology Substation is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • The theory, techniques, methods, materials, and tools used.
  • The instrumentation used in the discipline.
SKILLS
  • Good computer skills.
ABILITIES
  • Develop skill in the use and care of electrical and electronic test equipment used in the various areas of the discipline, such as oscilloscopes, digital logic analyzers, volt-ohm meters, communications line quality monitors, relay test systems automatic and manual, transducer testing and calibration equipment, fiber optic testing, and fusion devices, and other such equipment used in the trade.
  • Develop skill in using hand tools and precision soldering/unsoldering devices to make repairs to complex printed circuit boards and other electronic devices (Machine operators/inspection level).
  • Work off a six-foot stepladder or a 20-foot extension ladder to install and maintain equipment mounted above shoulder height, e.g., fiber splices and communication cables.
  • Load and unload medium-weight test equipment into and out of a standard passenger van and set the equipment up to perform tests and calibrate electronic or relay equipment at remote locations.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Manual labor work that involves walking or standing most of the time, exerting up to 100 pounds of force regularly, keyboard operations, and manipulating tools and wires.
  • Risks exposure to heights, toxic/caustic chemicals, traffic, moving machinery, extreme heat/cold, electrical shock, adverse weather conditions, bright/dim light, fumes, noxious odors, dust, pollen, wet, humid conditions, and extreme noise levels.
  • Being able to discriminate between the following colors generated by red/blue/green primary colors at full or half intensity: white, green, yellow, orange, magenta, red, cyan, and blue. This qualification will be confirmed by a standard medical test for color blindness.
