Summary

Youll design circuit boards for an engineering design firm that builds products for outside clients. Their work runs from consumer electronics to defense, and the projects this role supports right now are for defense industry clients. Youll take each board from the first design through schematics, layout, and bring up, mostly in Altium. Youll also meet with the client along the way to show where the design stands.

  • Draw schematics and lay out boards in Altium, then update them after each review.
  • Send your schematics and layouts through review with the other electrical engineers, and later with the client.
  • Get quotes from board fab shops and order prototype and production boards.
  • Power up new boards, probe and debug them, and work with lab technicians on any fine pitch rework.
  • Take boards from early prototypes through a final revision thats ready for production.
  • Work with mechanical, systems, and controls engineers to build your boards into the finished product and support testing.
  • Join daily or weekly status calls with the client and explain where the design is and whats next.
  • Review designs from other engineers and help newer engineers with their work.
  • Design to the standards each project calls for, such as safety, EMC, and military environmental standards.
  • Keep notes on changes future boards will need as testing moves forward.
  • Follow company rules for protecting client data and designs.
Qualifications Required

  • Multilayer board design, usually 2 to 8 layers.
  • Part selection and building a bill of materials.
  • Lab work with oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, and other test gear.
  • Experience leading the electrical side of an engineering project.
  • Clear speaking and writing skills, and youre comfortable talking with clients in meetings and design reviews.

Work Environment or Schedule

This is a hybrid role. Many projects start with about half your time onsite, or with a week or two onsite up front. Most of the work after that is remote with some site visits, then more onsite time near the end for bring up and hands on testing. Onsite work happens at the companys office and lab or at client sites around the Portland metro area, mostly on the Washington side near Vancouver. Hours arent a strict eight to five.
