Job summary

Voltech Instruments in Florida seeks a Test Technician to support testing, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, inspection, and preparation of Voltech products and sub-assemblies. You will work with Engineering, Quality, Production Control, and Stock teams to ensure performance and quality.

Responsibilities include functional testing with DMMs, LCR meters, oscilloscopes; circuit-board troubleshooting; component soldering (SMT and through-hole); calibration, packing, shipping, and 3D printing

Job description

The Test Technician is responsible for the testing, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, inspection, and preparation of Voltech products, sub-assemblies, prototypes, and test equipment. The role works closely with the Engineering, Quality, Production Control, and Stock teams to ensure products and equipment meet required performance and quality standards.

The Test Technician will also support engineering projects, product development, RMA evaluations, shipping and receiving activities, and general technical operations.

Key Responsibilities

Testing & Troubleshooting

  • Perform functional testing, programming, calibration, thermal cycle testing, and other required tests on Voltech products and sub-assemblies.
  • Conduct circuit-board-level troubleshooting and repair.
  • Diagnose electrical, electronic, and mechanical issues using logical troubleshooting methods.
  • Use test equipment including digital multimeters (DMMs), LCR meters, oscilloscopes, and other electronic test equipment.
  • Confirm that units are functioning correctly and meet required specifications before release or shipment.
  • Perform component-level repairs, including desoldering and soldering of both surface-mount (SMT) and through-hole components.
  • Install, inspect, maintain, and repair electronic and mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Assist with prototype and sub-assembly builds as required.
  • Identify recurring defects and recommend solutions to improve product reliability and manufacturing processes.

RMA & Product Evaluation

  • Evaluate returned products and RMAs to identify faults, failures, and potential causes.
  • Document test results, repair activities, and findings accurately.
  • Work with Quality Control and Management to identify failure trends and process deficiencies.
  • Provide technical feedback to support corrective and preventative actions.
  • Support the Engineering team with test setup, equipment preparation, and product testing.
  • Assist Engineering with the development and type testing of new hardware, software, and firmware.
  • Support prototype testing and product development activities.
  • Review and follow Process Requirements Documents (PRDs), work instructions, test procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Assist with technical investigations and engineering projects as required.

Calibration & Equipment Maintenance

  • Conduct routine testing and calibration activities to ensure equipment performs accurately and reliably.
  • Inspect and maintain test equipment, tools, machinery, and workstations.
  • Identify equipment faults and report issues requiring repair or replacement.
  • Maintain accurate calibration and service records.

Shipping, Receiving & Stock Support

  • Pack and unpack incoming and outgoing shipments safely and accurately.
  • Perform daily shipping and receiving activities as required.
  • Receive and account for new stock and equipment.
  • Pull parts, components, and equipment for team members as directed by Production Control.
  • Liaise with Production Control regarding shipping, receiving, stock, and job priorities.

3D Printing & Technical Support

  • Operate 3D printing equipment to produce fixtures, prototypes, components, and other items required by Engineering or Production.
  • Perform basic inspection and troubleshooting of 3D printers.
  • Support the development and modification of 3D-printed tools, fixtures, and prototypes.

Documentation & Database Management

  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of testing, repairs, calibration, RMA evaluations, and other technical activities.
  • Use database systems and Microsoft Office tools to complete daily tasks and maintain accurate records.
  • Ensure all work performed is properly documented and traceable.
  • Communicate status, issues, and completed work to the appropriate team members.

Safety & Workplace Standards

  • Follow all electrical, equipment, workplace, and safety procedures.
  • Report equipment faults, hazards, or unsafe working conditions immediately.
  • Maintain tools, test equipment, and work areas in a clean, safe, and organized condition.
  • Handle electronic components, equipment, and products appropriately to prevent damage.

Team Support & Training

  • Work closely with Engineering, Quality Control, Production Control, and other departments.
  • Assist with on-the-job training of junior team members when required.
  • Develop the skills necessary to support other team positions when needed.
  • Perform additional duties and technical tasks as prioritized by the Production Control Clerk, Manager, or Engineering team.

Required Knowledge & Skills

  • Thorough understanding of electronic theory and electrical principles.
  • Experience using electronic test equipment, including:
  • Digital multimeters (DMM)
  • LCR meters
  • Power supplies and other laboratory/test equipment
  • Practical experience with SMT and through-hole soldering and desoldering.
  • Strong electrical and electronic troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to read and follow electrical schematics, technical drawings, test procedures, and work instructions.
  • Understanding of electrical safety practices.
  • Good mechanical and hands-on technical skills.
  • Basic knowledge of databases and Microsoft Office tools.
  • Strong documentation and record-keeping skills.
  • Good organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to identify problems, investigate root causes, and recommend practical solutions.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with Engineering, Quality, and Production teams.
