Job summary

Convergint is seeking a full-time Security Specialist in Cedar Rapids, IA to support installation, programming, startup, and customer training on projects of varying complexity. You will work with a dynamic team to grow alongside Convergint’s expanding solutions while delivering world-class service.

You will read blueprints, troubleshoot, and ensure system performance across fire alarm, electronic security, and building automation systems, with travel to local sites as required.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of field service experience in security or life-safety systems.
  • Experience with fire alarm and electronic security systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting and programming abilities.
  • Able to read blueprints and electrical drawings.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel locally.

Responsibilities

  • Install, program, start-up and test security systems on varied projects.
  • Train customers and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Read schematics and repair equipment using test instruments.
  • Consult with engineering to resolve unusual problems in system operation.
  • Mentor less experienced staff and supervise testing activities.

What you’ll do with “Our Training and Your Experience”

  • Support Installations either hands on, training new colleagues, or help over the phone. Perform inspections, test & commission systems, and support a variety of standard and non-routine systems and equipment which may include physical or electronic security, fire alarm & life safety, and/or building automation. You are a key interface for the provision of support and is accountable for maximizing customer satisfaction.
  • Reads basic blueprints, schematics, manuals, and other specifications to determine installation procedures; Interprets manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams, and repairs equipment, utilizing knowledge of electronics and using standard test instruments and hand tools.
  • You are a key source of understanding security hardware for installation and service best practices. Your strengths include system knowledge, inspections, hardware functionality & compatibility, low-voltage circuitry understanding and system theory of operations. See the big picture of how the system should work for the customer and foresee issues if not used correctly.
  • Acts as “our customer’s best service provider” at all times thereby ensuring Convergint Technologies is the customer’s first choice for service.
  • Consults with engineering personnel to resolve unusual problems in system operation, maintenance, and warranty work.
  • May advise management regarding customer satisfaction, product performance, installation techniques and standards as well as suggestions for product improvements.
  • Identifies potential project risks, communicates to appropriate parties and assist in the development and implementation of strategies to minimize impact and to control deviations from estimated costs and project deadlines.
  • Using technical knowledge, skills and experience, acts as a mentor to less experienced staff. May supervise workers in testing, tuning, and adjusting equipment to obtain optimum operating performance.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as requested or required.
What You’ll Need
  • Exceptional customer focus and ability to work under pressure; ability to maintain awareness of and seek to meet the needs and wants of the customer without being prompted.
  • Solid technical skills and experience fire alarm systems, and/or electronic security systems.
  • Solid programming skills and proven ability to troubleshoot problems and look for solutions
  • To be a self-starter and work well with minimal supervision.
  • Solid mechanical and electrical aptitude (e.g. works with a variety of hand and power tools such as drill, screwdriver, wire stripper, hacksaw, crimper) and ability to read blueprints and drawings; solid math skills (for some positions, this may include calculating area, velocity, resistance, voltage, etc.).
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Solid organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Advanced computer skills including familiarity with MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel) and proficient in other relevant applications.
  • A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to travel locally to jobsites on a regular basis. Minimal overnight travel may be required.

Requirements

Education: High School/GED or equivalent experience

Minimum Experience: 3-5 years required

Preferred Experience: (but not required):

  • Relevant field service
  • software programming experience and NICET I certification
  • Certifications: Product-specific certifications, Industry-specific certifications and/or licenses, Software House, Lenel, Genetec, Avigilon, Milestone, Alta, Verkada, March Networks, AXIS, Hanwha, etc...
