Job Description:

Perform original and complex metadata treatment and authority work for electronic library materials including e-books, e-journals, streaming media, and digital collections within the University at Albany Libraries' shared SUNY-wide Alma environment. Provide insight and expertise for organizing digital collections (library and institutional repository) and contribute to the development and implementation of relevant policies, procedures, and workflows.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Performs original cataloging and classification, including authority work, in accordance with national standards and library-wide policies for electronic resources including e-books, e-journals, streaming media, and other digital materials.
  • Enables access to the library's digital resources by ensuring accurate URLs, editing metadata, and enhancing discoverability of purchased and subscribed resources.
  • Participates in the Electronic Theses and Dissertation (ETDs) workflows and provide oversight to staff assigned to assist with ETDs.
  • Creates and maintains metadata in the library catalog, discovery layer, and institutional repository.
  • Works closely with the Head of Resource Management, Library Systems staff, and the Electronic Resources Management Team to improve the functionality of discovery systems to provide a seamless end-user experience.
  • Evaluates electronic data in various formats for resource discovery and keep current with issues and trends in e-resource cataloging and discovery.
  • Assists with automating and integrating workflows for metadata creation and related processes for electronic resources.
  • Participates in the evaluation of vendor supplied bibliographic records and the coordination of batch loading those records into the library services platform and discovery layer.
  • Works collaboratively to develop and maintain cataloging and metadata documentation for electronic resources, makes recommendations for process improvement.
  • Assists in supervising student employees, graduate assistants, and interns working with electronic resources.
  • Performs functions normally expected of the University Libraries academic faculty, including contributing to the profession, Libraries, and University through scholarship and service.
  • Provides leadership, oversight and direction to direct reports (if assigned) to assure goals, programs, activities, and personnel practices are consistent with and contribute to the University's goals and strategies. Lead employees for maximum performance and dedication. Complete performance management feedback and goals timely and per requirements.
  • Demonstrates excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication as well as empathy, patience and tact.
  • Applies a strong technical aptitude and analytical mindset to problem-solving and learning new systems quickly.
  • Reports to Head of Resource Management.


Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization by date of application. Candidates who will not hold the degree by this date will not be considered.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience working with electronic resources metadata in a library environment.
  • Experience using cataloging standards, including MARC, RDA (Resources Description and Access), and AACR2.
  • Experience using controlled vocabularies (e.g., Library of Congress Subject Headings, Library of Congress Genres/Form Terms, Library of Congress Demographic Group Terms)
  • Experience creating metadata/catalog records using bibliographic tool or application.
  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community
  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role

  • Experience working with institutional repository
  • Experience working with electronic resource licensing and copyright
  • Experience using or creating Linked Data in library catalogs
  • Experience using MarcEdit or other record manipulations software
  • Experienced directing the work of others
  • Experience contributing to Metadata crosswalk designs for data migrations
  • Experience creating metadata for streaming media collections
  • Experience with batch loading and manipulation of electronic resources records
  • Experience with API integrations and automated metadata workflows
  • Experience with data modeling or specification design
  • Experience with reparative description processes
  • Experience using metadata transformation and normalization tools

Professional Rank and Salary Range:Senior Assistant Librarian (NSN3), $65,000-$70,000
