Job description

Company Description

Sonoran Epilepsy Center is a new outpatient neurology practice focused exclusively on epilepsy care, opening in August 2026. The practice provides comprehensive services from initial diagnosis through complex medication management and coordination with surgical teams. Sonoran Epilepsy Center combines the clinical rigor and expertise of an academic epilepsy center with the accessibility and personal attention of a community practice.

Team members will join a growing organization dedicated to improving quality of life for people living with seizures and related neurologic conditions. The environment emphasizes collaborative care, ongoing learning, and patient-centered service. Because this is a small, start-up specialty practice, every member of the team wears more than one hat and has a direct hand in shaping how the practice runs.

Role Description

The EEG Technician is a full-time, on-site role based in Phoenix, AZ. This is a blended neurodiagnostic and clinical support position: roughly half the day is spent performing routine and ambulatory EEG studies, and the other half supporting the epileptologist in clinic as a medical assistant.

On the neurodiagnostic side, the technician prepares patients for EEG testing, explains procedures in clear and respectful language, and ensures patient comfort and safety throughout the study — setting up and calibrating equipment, accurately placing electrodes, monitoring recordings, performing activation procedures, identifying and documenting artifacts or technical issues, and maintaining high-quality data for clinician interpretation.

On the clinical support side, the technician rooms patients, collects vital signs and interval history, updates medication lists and seizure logs, supports the physician during visits, and helps move orders, refills, prior authorizations, and results through to completion in athenahealth. All medical assistant duties are performed under the delegation and direct supervision of the supervising physician.

This role suits someone who enjoys variety, is comfortable being the person a patient sees from check-in through discharge, and wants a real voice in building the workflows of a new practice.

Key Responsibilities
Neurodiagnostics / EEG
  • Perform routine, sleep-deprived, and ambulatory EEG studies per practice and ACNS protocols
  • Set up, calibrate, and troubleshoot EEG equipment; verify impedances and signal quality throughout the recording
  • Apply electrodes accurately using the 10-20 system; adapt technique for pediatric, elderly, and cognitively impaired patients
  • Perform activation procedures (hyperventilation, photic stimulation) safely and document patient response
  • Recognize, document, and correct artifacts; annotate clinical events and patient behavior during the study
  • Prepare technical summaries and ensure complete, legible study documentation for physician interpretation
  • Hook up and take down ambulatory EEG units; instruct patients and families on home monitoring, event diaries, and equipment care
  • Maintain, clean, and disinfect EEG equipment and electrodes; track supply inventory and coordinate service or repairs
  • Follow infection control, patient safety, and seizure-response protocols at all times
Clinical Support / Medical Assistant
  • Room patients, obtain and document vital signs, height/weight, and reason for visit
  • Review and update medication lists, allergies, seizure frequency and semiology, and interval history in athenahealth
  • Assist the physician during examinations and procedures as directed
  • Administer medications, vaccines, or injections within scope, as delegated and supervised
  • Prepare and route prescriptions and refill requests, including anti-seizure medication refills, for physician approval
  • Support prior authorizations and appeals for medications, EEG studies, and imaging; track status to resolution
  • Coordinate outside records, imaging, labs, and referrals - including neurosurgery, neuropsychology, and epilepsy monitoring unit referrals
  • Return patient calls and portal messages within scope, escalating clinical questions appropriately
  • Complete point-of-care testing, specimen collection, and lab requisitions as needed
  • Maintain exam room readiness, clinical supplies, and sample/med inventory
Practice Support
  • Schedule and confirm EEG appointments; sequence studies and clinic visits to minimize patient trips
  • Verify orders, insurance authorization requirements, and pre-study instructions before the day of service
  • Support check-in, check-out, and front-office coverage as needed in a small-office setting
  • Contribute to the development of clinical workflows, templates, and protocols as the practice grows
  • Maintain patient privacy and uphold HIPAA and OSHA standards in all activities
Qualifications
Required
  • Completion of an accredited EEG or neurodiagnostic technologist program, or equivalent documented training; ABRET registration (R. EEG T.) or eligibility strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated proficiency in EEG setup, operation, and troubleshooting, with attention to electrode placement accuracy and recording quality
  • Knowledge of epilepsy, seizure types, and related diagnostic procedures sufficient to support accurate and safe testing
  • Foundational understanding of anatomy, medical terminology, and neurophysiology relevant to neurologic diagnostics
  • Willingness and ability to perform medical assistant duties under physician supervision; completion of an accredited medical assistant program, CMA/RMA certification, or eligibility to be trained and documented on the job per Arizona Medical Board requirements
  • Current BLS/CPR certification (or ability to obtain before start date)
  • Strong patient care skills, including clear communication, empathy, and comfort working with patients of diverse ages, abilities, and backgrounds
  • Ability to follow detailed clinical protocols, maintain accurate documentation, and uphold privacy and safety standards, including HIPAA compliance
  • Capacity to stand for extended periods, assist with patient positioning, move equipment safely, and work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
Preferred
  • Previous experience in neurology, epilepsy monitoring, or neurodiagnostic testing in an outpatient or hospital setting
  • Experience with athenahealth (athenaOne) or comparable EHR, including orders, refills, and patient portal messaging
  • Familiarity with prior authorization processes for anti-seizure medications and diagnostic studies
  • Experience with ambulatory or long-term EEG monitoring
  • Phlebotomy or point-of-care testing experience
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
What We Offer
  • The chance to build a specialty practice from day one, with real input into how care is delivered
  • Direct, daily mentorship from a fellowship-trained epileptologist
  • Support for continuing education and ABRET credentialing
  • [Compensation range, schedule, and benefits to be inserted]
