Job summary

Description

The Electro-Mechanical Technician is responsible for creating, enforcing, and maintaining a safe, compliant, and zero-shortcut work environment in the Tube Mill. Safety is the first priority of this role. The technician ensures all equipment—HF seam welders, payoff/accumulators, roll-forming stands, drives, straighteners, cutoff systems, presses, punches, fabrication tools/machinery, aluminum end-weld equipment, compressors, dryers, hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical/control systems, and facility infrastructure—is operated and maintained in full compliance with all applicable regulatory, agency, and company safety standards. This includes eliminating makeshift, temporary, or unsafe repairs and ensuring all work meets engineered, code-compliant standards at all times.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Tube Mill Mechanical Maintenance

  • Diagnose, repair, and rebuild mechanical assemblies (bearings, gearboxes, rollers, shafts). Maintain roll-forming stands and weld boxes. Perform roll changeovers, alignments, and wear inspections. Maintain straighteners, pinch rolls, leveling rolls, and tension systems.
  • Ensure all repairs meet engineered, code-compliant standards; temporary, makeshift, or unsafe repair methods are not permitted.

  • Complete work orders, PMs, and CMMS entries. Interpret and apply information from equipment manuals, blueprints, mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, hydraulic/pneumatic diagrams, and OEM documents.
  • Train lower-level technicians and support on-call rotation.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot High-Frequency (HF) seam welding systems. Diagnose weld chatter, wander, lack of fusion, overheating, and bead defects.
  • Maintain scarfing knives and bead removal systems.

Aluminum End‑Weld Equipment Support:

  • Maintain and repair aluminum end‑welding equipment, including MIG/TIG weld machines, wire feeders, torches, clamps, fixtures, and alignment tooling. Troubleshoot welding support equipment, including grounding circuits, trigger circuits, drive assemblies, cooling systems, and torch wiring. Maintain and repair end‑prep tools such as chop saws, bevelers, grinders, and facing tools used for aluminum pipe preparation. Ensure welding fixtures, clamps, jigs, and alignment tools remain functional, safe, and correctly set.
  • Support production welders by ensuring welding equipment uptime and responding to equipment breakdowns. Follow hot‑work, fire‑safety, and LOTO procedures during welding equipment maintenance.

Electrical & Controls:

  • Troubleshoot electrical systems up to 480V. Diagnose and adjust Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) parameters. No energized work beyond company policy.
  • Assist with PLC/HMI hardware swaps and I/O verification. Troubleshoot sensors, safety circuits, relays, and interlocks.

Hydraulics, Pneumatics, and Utilities:

  • Maintain hydraulic valves, cylinders, pumps, hoses, and regulators. Troubleshoot pneumatic systems (solenoids, FRLs, actuators). Maintain air compressors, refrigerated and desiccant dryers. Maintain payoff/accumulators and de-coilers. Adjust strip alignment, pinch pressure, tables, and guides.

Fabrication Tools & Machinery:

  • Safely operate and maintain fabrication tools, including band saws, drill presses, grinders, ironworkers, cutting torches, and welding support tools. Perform fabrication tasks such as building guards, brackets, mounts, fixtures, and safety components.

Facility Infrastructure (Mechanical & Non-Mechanical)

  • Maintain facility infrastructure, including lighting, electrical distribution support equipment (no live electrical work), compressed air piping, ventilation fans, HVAC units, and utility systems.
  • Maintain an organized, safe, and well-stocked inventory of tools, parts, and equipment to support efficient and compliant shop operations.
  • Follow proper procedures for handling, storing, and disposing of oils, solvents, coolants, and other regulated or hazardous materials.
  • Perform minor carpentry, fastener replacement, painting, patching, and general building upkeep. Inspect, troubleshoot, and maintain hoists, cranes, exhaust fans, and shop air systems.
  • Support regular checks of safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, ventilation systems, and emergency exit access as part of maintaining a safe facility environment.
