Job description

POSITION TITLE: Electro-Mechanical Controls Engineer
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: This position reports to the Electrical Manager
BACKGROUND: GapVax, Inc. is a Johnstown, PA manufacturer of vacuum trucks, municipal sewer cleaning trucks, trailer-mounted jetter equipment and related equipment.

GapVax equipment uses control systems to operate various functions and to prevent unsafe conditions. The control system includes sensors, push-buttons controls, joysticks, lights, displays, alarms, output modules, and wireless remote-controls. The Electro-Mechanical Controls Engineer maintains existing controls systems and supports the development of new systems. The Controls Engineer position also has a mechanical design role related to laying out control boxes and panels and a production support role in updating Bills of Material in the ERP system.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Load programs and parameters into controllers and displays using the Danfoss Plus+1 service tool
  • Flash controllers, I/O modules, and HMI (Human Machine Interface) displays
  • Map out CAN input/output messaging (trigger messages, feedback messages, output messages) across all CAN controllers, I/O modules and other devices.
  • Program wireless remotes for trucks. Match the correct program with the option package and functionality of the truck.
  • Troubleshoot/correct any electrical issues that prevent outsourced product supplier from testing unit before coming to GapVax facility.
  • Perform CAN traces (data extraction) using pCANView. Analyze and interpret CAN data to troubleshoot and diagnose electrical and control problems affecting chassis, engine, transmission and GapVax control systems.
  • Sign off on control system for each truck before going to test.
  • Collect serial numbers of control system component before trucks enter test.
  • Once tested, pull all programming related files and parameters and save into the AutoDesk Vault (permanent product record).
  • Using CREO Parametric and/or AutoCAD Inventor, create mechanical layouts for electrical boxes and panels for truck-mounted and trailer-mounted equipment.
  • Maintain and update Bill of Materials for electrical systems in ERP system.
  • Integrate new components and subsystems into the control system, including wireless remotes, input/output modules, sensors (thermal, pressure, motion), cordsets, and other operated devices.
  • Supports the Product Development team with programming, troubleshooting, and new product implementation.
REQUIRED SKILLS
  • Ability to use CREO Parametric and/or AutoCAD Inventor for solid modelling design and drawing development.
  • Ability to understand the intended use and safety requirements of GapVax equipment.
  • Ability to read, produce, and interpret drawings, work orders, product sheets, sketches, and written instructions
  • Functional understanding of the SAE-J1939 Controller Area Network Protocol.
  • Ability to map out CAN messaging for all system hardware
  • Ability to load programs and flash hardware
  • Ability to develop control logic (XML file) for I/O modules and controllers
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
  1. 1. Bachelor’s degree in engineering, preferably electro-mechanical or electrical, and a background in a manufacturing environment
  2. 2. Experience with ERP Systems.
  3. 3. Experience with mobile controls, CANBUS, J1939 protocols and multiplex control systems preferred.
  4. 4. Experience reading and understanding work orders and product sheets
  5. 5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  6. 6. Hands-on working with production and product testing is required
  7. 7. Must have high standards of quality and pride in work
  8. 8. Able to solve problems and think analytically
  9. 9. Must be able to work effectively independently and with others
