Job description

Overview

The Powertrain Controls Engineer will work within a team of Powertrain controls, calibrations and integration engineers to develop electrified powertrain systems for current and next‑generation electrified powertrains for Stellantis NV vehicles. The overall goal of the team is to develop a complete electrified powertrain that meets the vehicle functional requirements for fuel economy, emissions, drivability, and diagnostics.

The ideal candidate is a strong team player willing to work in a fast‑paced environment and will be involved in developing control strategies related to the strategic optimization of engine speed, gear, powertrain state, engine torque optimization, tactical torque controls for drivability management, brake regeneration controls, and hybrid shift execution strategies. The candidate should have a strong background in modeling mechanical transmission systems and be familiar with using lever‑analogy principles to determine dynamic torque and speed relations used extensively across hybrid torque controls.

Responsibilities

The Powertrain Controls Engineer Senior will work closely with a cross‑functional team, utilizing various tools (vehicle, HIL, dyno, virtual, rapid prototyping) through the V‑model development process to ensure quality and robustness of the production algorithms. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Model mechanical systems to simulate and understand requirements in Simulink for control purposes
  • Interface with systems and calibration to fully understand the requirements
  • Develop implementation strategies
  • Assess and document the impacts against regulatory requirements
  • Markup Simulink models to ensure the design meets functional/operational requirements
  • Validate the design during the production process
  • Ensure project is on track by developing plans, tracking progress, and presenting technical reports to management and project chiefs
  • Participate in decision‑making process on control strategy design to achieve functional objectives
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, or related Engineering field from an ABET accredited university with 10+ years automotive experience
  • Specialization in classical and modern control disciplines with vehicle application
  • Embedded software experience
  • Experience with model‑based development tools such as MATLAB/Simulink
  • Experience with data acquisition and analysis tools such as ETAS‑INCA
  • Demonstrated technical problem‑solving ability
  • Strong overall knowledge of vehicle and powertrain functions
  • Experience with modeling, simulation, development, testing, calibration and/or validation
  • Outstanding interpersonal and problem‑solving skills
  • 8+ years experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's or PhD in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, or related Engineering field from an ABET accredited university with 5+ years experience
  • Specialization in hybrid torque control disciplines
  • Knowledge of powertrain control system architecture best practices
  • Demonstrated application of technical excellence
