Job summary

The University of Minnesota seeks a full-time, one-year temporary research position focused on lab studies and analysis of iron oxide reduction with H2. The goal is to develop an electrified microwave hydrogen plasma process for reducing iron ore concentrates at the East Bank campus in Minneapolis.

Primary duties include assembling and testing plasma reactors, data analysis, materials ordering, and maintaining lab safety. Competitive benefits and a 40-hour week are offered.

Qualifications

  • BS/BA in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or chemical technologies plus at least two years of relevant experience, or a combination equaling six years
  • Lab/research experience with lab techniques and safety procedures; some reactor design/assembly experience
  • Experience with heat exchangers, condensers, filtration, combustion or reactor design
  • Ability to plan, execute and analyze experiments with accurate lab records
  • Some programming experience (Excel, Matlab, LabVIEW)
  • Data analysis skills (Excel) with basic statistics understanding
  • Ability to work in a team setting

Responsibilities

  • Assemble, build and test plasma iron ore reduction reactors (60%)
  • Assist in designing reactor setups and experiments
  • Independently plan and perform experimental analyses
  • Find solutions to routine technical or operational problems
  • Data analysis and reporting (20%)
  • Run materials analyses and record experimental protocols
  • Assist in interpretation of results and collaboration with the team
  • Support PI in grant reporting
  • Supplies and materials ordering (10%)
  • Oversee equipment use and maintenance; prepare apparatus and materials
  • Organize equipment and project setup
  • Lab safety (5%)
  • Support lab safety and implement procedures
  • Interact with safety officer to document safe operation
  • Other duties as assigned (5%)
