Job summary

Huntington Ingalls Industries' Mission Technologies division in Chesapeake, VA seeks an Elevator Support Unit technician to perform skilled trades on weapon and aircraft elevators and related systems aboard U.S. Navy ships.

In this entry-level role, you will work under supervision with daily physical labor in an industrial shipboard environment, following blueprints and safety protocols while contributing to critical defense infrastructure.

Qualifications

  • High School education and 1 year of related experience, or Trade School or equivalent.
  • Must have knowledge and/or experience using basic hand tools.
  • Must have ability to obtain DoD security clearance and base access within 60 days.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine skilled trades duties in support of repairs and installations.
  • Work from blueprints and manuals; follow standard work assignments.
  • Apply policies to complete tasks across contracts and customer requirements.
  • Perform semi-skilled and unskilled labor for installation, maintenance and repair.

Join our Elevator Support Unit (ESU)! The position will support contracted skilled trades work on Weapon Elevators and Aircraft Elevators and their systems on U.S. Navy ships. The selected candidate will support ESU by performing a variety of skilled trades, maintenance and technical tasks on aircraft carrier elevators, cargo handling systems and associated equipment, including aircraft elevators, weapons elevators and vertical stores conveyors. Selected candidate will work closely with higher level employee in specialized assignments. May assist other employees/navy personal on shipboard systems and day-to-day operation. Work includes daily activities of physical labor in an industrial and shipboard environment. Your accomplishments will make a positive impact supporting the U.S. Navy and America’s national defense! Travel within and outside of the continental United States may be required. This is a full-time position, located in Chesapeake, VA.

What You Will Do
  • Under direction, performs routine work technical trades duties to include support of technical repairs and installations.
  • Work from blueprints and tech manuals. Work assigned is typical of standard work assignments common to specialty trades.
  • Applies job skills and company policies to complete a wide range of tasks that vary based on job, contract, customer requirements, specifications, etc.
  • Performs semi-skilled and unskilled laboring duties related to the installation, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of systems and equipment.
  • Performs duties outside of regular duties in order to complete installation or work assignment.
What You Must Have
  • High School education and 1 year of related experience, or Trade School or equivalent.
  • Must have knowledge and/or experience using basic hand tools.
  • Must have experience working in a team environment.
  • Must have ability to follow safety protocols and procedures.
  • Must be able to obtain base access credentials within 60 days of hire and maintain them throughout employment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Security clearance.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be able to provide own hand tools as designated per trades specialty.
Preferred: Bonus Points For
  • Knowledge and/or experience in a trades specialty (i.e. mechanical, electrical, welding, HVAC, fitting) preferred.
  • A current, valid DoD Security clearance.
  • Candidates who are currently enrolled or have graduated from and/or completed a vocational school or skilled trades certificate program within the last two years are preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical manuals and/or related technical documents a plus.
Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
