Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) Mission Technologies—Elevator Support Unit—seeks a Marine Mechanic to maintain and repair shipboard elevators and related equipment for U.S. Navy vessels.

This full-time, on-site role is based in Chesapeake, VA, with travel possible inside and outside the continental U.S. Travel, safety credentials, and DoD clearance readiness are required; related trades experience is essential.

Qualifications

  • High School education or trade school and 4 years related experience.
  • Must obtain medical clearance to wear a half-face respirator.
  • Must obtain base access credentials within 60 days of start date and maintain throughout employment.
  • Must travel when not assigned to local tasking.
  • Must have experience installing, maintaining and repairing structural and mechanical systems and associated equipment.
  • Must have experience using power tools and measurement devices.
  • Must be able to read, interpret and follow blueprints, technical drawings and/or technical manuals.
  • Must have knowledge of safety and quality control steps and procedures.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance.
  • Must be able to provide hand tools per trades designation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and repairs on aircraft carrier elevators, cargo handling systems, vertical stores conveyors, and associated equipment.
  • May provide direction and lead others.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions to eliminate problems in minimum time. Apply comprehensive understanding of production and processes toward completion of assignments.
  • May manage one or more multiple jobs.
  • Perform a variety of complicated and non-routine tasks including duties outside of specialty in order to complete installation or work assignment.
  • Develop and use technical documents including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports and task or trip reports.
  • Schedule, report and brief customers and senior management.

Summary

Join HII as we keep the world's most powerful Navy afloat! Join our Elevator Support Unit (ESU) as a Marine Mechanic! This position will support contracted skilled trades work on Weapon Elevators and Aircraft Elevators and their systems on U.S. Navy ships. Travel within and outside of the continental United States may be required. This is a full-time position, located in Chesapeake, VA.

What You Must Have

High School education, or Trade School or equivalent, and 4 years of related experience.

Must be able to obtain medical clearance to wear a half-face respirator.

Must be able to obtain base access credentials within 60 days of start date, and maintain credentials throughout employment.

Must be able to travel when not assigned to local tasking.

Must have experience installing, maintaining and repairing structural andmechanicalsystems and associated equipment.

Must have experience using various power tools and measurement devices.

Must be able to provide hand tools per trades designation.

Preferred: Bonus Points For
  • Experience related to maintenance and repair of shipboard aircraft elevator,ordnance handling equipment, orvertical package conveyors preferred.
  • Experience in the operation, repair and maintenance of marine hydraulic systems highly desired.
  • Prior Shipboard experience preferred.
  • Candidates who have graduatedfrom and/or completed a vocational school, apprenticeship program or askilled trades certificate program are preferred.
  • Current or active DoD security clearance a plus.
Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
