Job summary

Valparaiso University is seeking an experienced electrical technician to perform routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs across campus facilities. The role includes servicing generators, emergency lighting, and high- voltage distribution equipment to ensure reliable campus operations.

The ideal candidate has an associates degree or related vocational training with 4–5 years of electrical experience, and a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Execute regular maintenance and inspections of generators and emergency lighting.
• Perform preventative maintenance on switches, outlets, lighting, and sensors.
• Coordinate and repair electrical equipment including emergency lighting, light fixtures/ballasts, generators, switches, outlets, sensors, and outdoor lighting.
• Replace light bulbs and ballasts campus-wide.
• Perform bulb replacement in pole lighting using a lift.
• Respond to after-hours events and emergencies on campus.
• Set up temporary sound/recording equipment for events.
• Complete work orders and communicate status and updates.

Job description

Major Responsibilities:

• Execute regular maintenance and inspections of generators and emergency lighting
• Perform preventative maintenance inspections and repairs of switches, outlets, lighting, and sensors
• Coordinate, troubleshoot, repair, inspect, and maintain electrical equipment including but not limited to, emergency lighting, light fixtures/ballasts, generators, switches, outlets, occupancy sensors, timers, relays, and outdoor lighting
• Replace light bulbs and ballasts throughout campus
• Perform bulb replacement in pole lighting using a lift
• Cover Athletic and Non-Athletic events on campus after standard business hours
• Complete set-up of temporary sound and recording equipment for events
• Respond to emergency electrical calls such as power outages
• Complete work orders and communicate the status when resolved or an update is appropriate
• Assist with pulling wire
• Perform wiring of motors, pumps, fans, compressors, and current regulating equipment
• Read and interpret electrical building plans, blueprints schematics, sketches and manufacturer specifications
• Assist other trades as needed

Required Knowledge and Skills:

• On the job experience, Vocational School, or Associates Degree
• Four to five years of electrical experience
• Valid Driver's License
• Comprehensive knowledge of state and local electrical codes
• Experience in commercial high voltage power distribution

Other Qualifications:

• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office products
• Working knowledge of computers for tasks including reading email, logging hours and entering work order information
• Ability to work independently, but also an excellent collaborator and team player
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions
• Ability to problem solve and creatively overcome obstacles
• Ability to work with conduit
• Capability to perform work with prolonged standing, bending and working in confined spaces and ability to work from ladders or elevated platforms
