Job summary

Rochester Institute of Technology’s Facilities Management Services is seeking an Electrician II to maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and upgrade electrical systems across academic and residential buildings on campus. You will respond to work orders, perform preventive maintenance, and guide student employees and junior staff, while adhering to safety standards and the National Electrical Code.

This is an on-site, non-exempt role with opportunities to contribute to campus-wide projects.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • 4 years of related electrical experience.
  • 4 years of formal electrical training program.
  • Equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains electrical infrastructures and components.
  • Guides and supports lighting technicians and fire alarm technicians as needed.
  • Maintains daily record keeping such as work orders, timekeeping, and emails.
  • Evaluates electrical deficiencies and advises department staff on repairs.
  • Assists and supports electrical contractors.
  • Organizes, plans, and ensures tools, equipment, PPE, and materials available for emergencies.
  • Performs preventive maintenance tasks such as generator testing and sprinkler testing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Schedule

This position may require working various shifts, weekends, holidays, and hours outside of a standard work schedule. The successful candidate must be available for on‑call assignments and provide contact information for inclusion in the department's call‑in roster to support urgent situations, including severe weather events and other campus emergencies.

Driver's License Requirements

The successful candidate may be required to operate university vehicles and must enroll in the New York State License Event Notification Service (NYS LENS) program upon hire. Candidates are encouraged to review RIT's Vehicle and Driver Safety Procedures for additional information.

FMS supports the RIT community by designing, constructing, operating, and maintaining a high‑quality, cost‑effective campus environment. As part of the FMS Utilities Maintenance team, the Electrician II plays a vital role in maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and upgrading electrical systems in academic and residential buildings across campus, responding to work orders, preventive maintenance needs, and electrical emergencies. This position works independently to resolve complex issues while providing guidance and support to student employees and less experienced staff.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains common electrical infrastructures and components
  • Guides and supports lighting technicians and fire alarm technicians as needed
  • Maintains daily record keeping such as work order updates, timekeeping, and email
  • Evaluates electrical deficiencies and advises department staff on repairs.
  • Assists and supports electrical contractors
  • Organizes, plans, and ensures tools, equipment, personal protective equipment, and materials available in response to electrical or fire alarm emergencies
  • Performs operational preventive maintenance tasks such as emergency generator testing and sprinkler testing
  • Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code
  • Knowledge of basic office computer software such as Microsoft Office
  • Skill in written and verbal communication
  • Skill in repair of electrical meters and use of test equipment
  • Ability to read blueprints and electrical schematics
  • Ability to use power hand tools
Minimum Education & Experience
